Excerpt from Substitutes for Scarce Materials This pamphlet gives information on' possible substitutes for some of the principal scarce materials used as disinfectants, livestock medi cines, feed supplements, fungicides for plant diseases, fertilizers, and insecticides for plants, animals, and human beings. It 1s by no means a complete listing of all the materials that are scarce or may become scarce during the war. The primary purpose in preparing the lists Was to supplement the recommendations given in Farmers' Bulletins and other Department publications written before the war, Wherever these recommendations did not deal adequately with the question of alternatives for materials ordinarily used. Fortunately, in some cases there are priorities which permit those' concerned to obtain scarce materials needed. In some cases, too, sup plies may be available in one locality though not in another. The situation is shifting and uncertain, however. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Pattern of America It has been the aim to include enough topics for study in each chapter to provide an opportunity for choice of those of especial appeal to individual clubs or members. For Alaska, to cite an example, several alternatives present themselves: one paper to include a survey of the whole subject: two or more papers com bining topics; or one paper on each of the suggested topics. A further alternative is, of course, to Omit Alaska entirely and de vote the program to the other subjects in that chapter. Since every good book is not necessarily every man's meat, enough books have been suggested for most chapters to permit a considerable freedom of selection. Thus clubs may choose among the books listed those for which they have personal pref erence and yet find that they have sufficient material to cover selected topics adequately. Excerpt from Study of Alternatives: Western Pennsylvania Region: Its Landscape, People, and Industry In November 1992, the Southwestern Pennsylvania Heritage Preservation Commission, acting under the authority of Public Law 100-698, requested that the National Park Service, Partnerships Branch, undertake four studies of the iron and steel, coal and coke, glass, and aluminum industries in the western Pennsylvania region. The studies were to evaluate the resource bases related to these four industries and develop viable alternatives for their conservation, use, and interpretation. Close coordination with state and local partners, both public and private, was considered vital to the successful completion of these planning efforts. The study team determined that the diverse stories of the political, social, and economic development of western Pennsylvania would guide the methodology of data collection for the resource inventory. The region's industrial heritage cannot be understood completely without some appreciation of the other significant chapters in its history. The stories of the brutal warfare of the colonial era, the explosive American expansion in the early 19th century, the technological advances in transportation, as well as the rise of American industry of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reinforce the fact that the region's role as a vital crossroads and rich resource base remained remarkably consistent over time. The stories of these events, combined with many of the region's resources, would give visitors a clearer understanding of how the evolution of one region can alter the history of an entire nation.
