Excerpt from Studies in the Literature, of Northern Europe In selecting subjects for this book, I have been led by two considerations, choosing first what has charmed myself, and next what seems likely to amuse the reader. For in wandering unaccompanied through a new literature, the student is drawn by instinct to those epochs and those figures which are personally most attractive to him. He cannot assert that they have more general importance than others, but at least they have more individual importance to himself: he likes them better, they stimulate his imagination more than their compeers; and what has pleased him he is apt to conceive will please his friends. This is my excuse for the inequalities of my method, for the accidental character of the selection. A few studies of salient points, prominent peaks and chains upon the map of literature, are more likely to arrest attention than a general survey of the whole, which might be tedious. Excerpt from The History and Romance of Northern Europe: A Library of Supreme Classics Printed in Complete Form Not before 1770, when Bishop Percy translated Mallet's Northern Antiquities, was anything known here of Ice land, or its literature. Only within the latter part of the nineteenth century has it been studied, and little has been done as yet. It is, however, becoming ever clearer, and to an increasing number, how supremely important is Icelandic as a word-hoard to the English-speaking peoples, and that in its legend, song, and story there is a very mine of noble and pleasant beauty and high manhood. That which has been done, one may hope, is but the beginning of a great new birth, that shall give back to our language and litera ture all that heedlessness and ignorance bid fair for awhile to destroy. Built around key events, from the eviction of a self-managed social centre in Copenhagen in 2007 to the Climate Summit protests in 2009, this book contributes to anthropological literature on contemporary Euro-American politics foreshadowing recent waves of public dissent. Stine Krøijer explores political forms among left radical and anarchist activists in Northern Europe focusing on how forms of action engender time. Drawing on anthropological literature from both Scandinavia and the Amazon, this ethnography recasts theoretical concerns about body politics, political intentionality, aesthetics, and time.
