Excerpt from Studies in Political and Social Ethics I Have to thank the editors of the International Journal of Ethics and The Contemporary Review, the Committee of the Co-operative Wholesale Society and the Committee of South Place Ethical Society, Finsbury, for their kindness in sanctioning the re-publication of articles and lectures which they first put in print. These are here reproduced with a few verbal alterations and some slight modifications of statement. But, on the whole, they have been left in their original form. As will be seen, the papers here collected together were written at considerable intervals of time and adapted to different hearers or readers; and the same subject is often approached from various starting-points. What is said in one paper must be taken as qualifying or supplementing what is said in another. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Today, friendship, love and sexuality are mostly viewed as private, personal and informal relations. In the mediaeval and early modern period, just like in ancient times, this was different. The classical philosophy of friendship (Aristotle) included both friendship and love in the concept of philia. It was also linked to an argument about the virtues needed to become an excellent member of the city state. Thus, close relations were not only thought to be a matter of pleasant gatherings in privacy, but just as much a matter of ethics and politics. What, then, happened to the classical ideas of close relations when they were transmitted to philosophers, clerical and monastic thinkers, state officials or other people in the medieval and early modern period? To what extent did friendship transcend the distinctions between private and public that then existed? How were close relations shaped in practice? Did dialogues with close friends help to contribute to the process of subject-formation in the Renaissance and Enlightenment? To what degree did institutions of power or individual thinkers find it necessary to caution against friendship or love and sexuality?

Excerpt from Social Ethics: An Introduction to the Nature and Ethics of the State IN these days, when the social mind is troubled with a plethora of books, the writer who proposes an addition to the number should be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in him. There is no lack of social studies, but it seems to me that there is room for a book which treats social phenomena from a distinctively Christian point of view, and yet gives adequate place to the con elusions of science and philosophy. What is wanted is a Christian cosmic philosophy, for philosophy must be Christian to be cosmic. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Ethics of Political Science: A Lecture When Mr. Lincoln spoke at Gettysburg of the United States government as of the people, by the people, for the people, his words met with general assent. The nation felt that it had its own government rightly defined. But such short phrases, however tunefully they strike the ear on great occasions, need to be devel Oped, or their wit alone is noticed and their wisdom overlooked. Excerpt from Ethics Civil and Political The author will be charged with pessimism, and not without a certain degree of justification. While he holds that whatever is is wrong, he believes that man is passing from darkness to light, and that it doth not yet appear what he shall be; but he feels assured that when the race makes its exit from darkness it will leave behind old measures and systems, and em brace such as may be dictated by a clearer conception of justice and brotherhood. Excerpt from Ethics of Citizenship This leads to an exposition in Elements of Political Consistency of the view that a sound practical judgment lies at the root of all true con sistenc'y; and to an analysis of the conditions which combine to make the judgment sound. Democracy ana' Character, which follows, is an attempt to estimate the influences which a demo cratic form of society, especially when it is com mercial and industrial, tends to exercise upon moral character. It is not denied that there are reasons for misgiving and apprehension; but, as against these, grounds for confidence are sought, firstly, in the fact that there is already so much in democratic development to strengthen the belief in the worth and possibilities of men; and, secondly. Excerpt from Corruption in American Politics and Life Of the several studies making up the present work the first and second only have been published elsewhere. The writer desires to acknowledge the courtesy Of the International Journal of Ethics in permitting the reprint, without material altera tions, of the Apologies for Political Corruption, and of the Political Science Quarterly for a similar favour with regard to The Nature of Political Corruption. Objection will perhaps be made to the precedence given the Apologies over The Nature of Political Corruption in the present volume. Weak as it may be in logic this arrange ment would seem to be the better one in ethics hence the decision in its favour. Definition could wait, it was felt, until every opportunity had been given to the apologists for corruption to present their case.
