This book was made in honor of Jaxon Liam Boomsma. In 2017, Jaxon was tragically killed in a farming accident when he was just seven years old. He loved nothing more than being on the farm. His bubbly personality and toothless smile will never be forgotten. To honor Jaxon, our family and the JLB Mission 23 Committee set up a memorial fund called the Jaxon Boomsma Memorial Fund. The JLB Mission 23 Committee was formed to help keep Jaxon’s smile alive, and consists of family and friends in the Yankton community. The Jaxon Boomsma Memorial Fund has helped enhance community parks and farm safety programs. We have also set up an annual scholarship for a Yankton High School senior who will study in an agricultural related field. Our main goal is to promote farm safety and keep kids safe. As a family we wanted to be able to keep Jaxon’s smile alive by helping make the places he loved safer and more beautiful for other kids. We also want to prevent more accidents from taking young lives too soon. To help donate or follow our journey, you can follow our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/jaxonboomsma23/

Offering expertise in the teaching of writing (Kim Jaxon) and the teaching of science (Leslie Atkins Elliott and Irene Salter), this book will help instructors create classrooms in which students use writing to learn and think scientifically. The authors provide concrete approaches for engaging students in practices that mirror the work that writing plays in the development and dissemination of scientific ideas, as opposed to replicating the polished academic writing of research scientists. Addressing a range of genres that can help students deepen their scientific reasoning and inquiry, this text includes activities, guidelines, resources, and assessment suggestions. Composing Science is a valuable resource for university-level science faculty, science methods course instructors in teacher preparation programs, and secondary science teachers who have been asked to address the Common Core ELA Standards. Book Features: Provides models for integrating writing into science courses and lesson plans. Focuses on the work that science writing does, both in the development and dissemination of ideas. Addresses the Next Generation Science Standards and the Common Core ELA Standards. Includes samples of student work, classroom transcripts, and photographs that capture the visual elements of science writing. “The pedagogy described in Composing Science doesn’t only recapture the sense of the uncertainty of discovery, it also articulates and examines the social and collaborative writing practices that science uses to produce knowledge and reduce uncertainty. Without question, teachers of science will find this book inspirational and useful, college teachers for sure, but also teachers up and down the curriculum.” —Tom Fox, director, Site Development, National Writing Project “This book will be invaluable, not only for the genuinely new and wonderful ideas for teaching, but also and maybe more for the rich examples from the authors’ classes. Through the lens of writing we see students doing science—and it is truly science—in surprising and delightful ways.” —David Hammer, professor, Tufts University

Jaxon worked his magic which allowed them all to communicate with each other and, by some cunning feline manipulation, Joshua was soon known as the man-servant! The man-servant had no idea how full of adventures and humor his life was to become, with the antics of his three lodgers. He also had no idea that they would quickly steal his heart and be his best friends!

Varkuvia, ruled by five powerful kings, is the richest, most powerful kingdom in the land. For centuries they have been protected by the Order of Acrium, the greatest fighting force known in the history of men. Many have tried to invade the land, but since the order has been formed, they had not lost a single battle. However, the four lords of the city-states of the mountainous terrain of the east have formed an alliance, secretly brewing a plan to overthrow this kingdom. Unscrupulously, and with unconscionable manipulation, the Order is disbanded. On the eastern side, the Legion of the Rising Sun is created, modeled around the Order of Acrium. But whereas the Order is famed for its codes of honor, the Legion is known for its brutality. And thus the Legion and the four treacherous lords kindle the fires of war, spreading the flames to the impregnable city of Karalis. Trystan, a member of the disbanded Order of Acrium, is thrown in the midst of war. By his honor as a member, he takes up arms to save the city of Karalis, its people, and his friends. But in every corner lurks darkness, lies, and danger; and Trystan must find it within himself to see the light of hope. This tale of power, lust, and deceit will take you into the vast kingdom of Varkuvia, into the lives of the kings, and into the life of one man who became a kingdom’s hero. A man who has finally come to fully understand the meaning of darkest valor—to always uphold the peace, protect the weak, and vanquish the wicked.
