'A profoundly valuable collection, full of fresh perspective, and opening doors into all kinds of material that has been routinely neglected or patronized' Rowan Williams, TLS This rich and surprising anthology is a holistic, global survey of a lyric conversation about the divine, one which has been ongoing for millennia. Beginning with the earliest attributable author in all of human literature, the twenty-third century BCE Sumerian High Priestess Enheduanna, and taking in a constellation of voices - from King David to Lao Tzu, from the Epic of Gilgamesh to the Malian Epic of Sundiata - this selection presents a number of canonical figures like Blake, Dickinson and Tagore, alongside lesser-anthologized, diverse poets going up to the present day. Together they show the breathtaking multiplicity of ways humanity has responded to the spiritual, across place and time.

Spiritually Poetic for the Heart of the Saints was given to me by the Holy Spirit of God. Days and nights, mostly nights, the Holy Spirit would minister to me, and afterwards the Holy Spirit would inspire me to write songs (praise), poems and at times Ive heard sermons and I have to say that I realize that to be used by the Spirit I had to walk in the Spirit. Stay prayed up, read my word (Bible) regularly and more than anything give God continual praise and in doing so God has blessed me with this book and gift to write spiritual literature.

"For Anglicans, English lyric poetry occupies a significant place: they do not turn to it in order to learn a spirituality so much as to find "companionship in practising what they have already begun to understand of life in the presence of the Holy." The lyric poet is not primarily engaged in prescribing or instructing. Herbert, Vaughan, Donne and their successors down to Eliot and R. S. Thomas in our own century, offer as it were an overhead discourse that often touches on the hidden depths of the life of the spirit." "William Countryman's obvious love for this poetry, and his sense of a relationship with its writers - a shared history, a shared tradition of worship, a shared gaze towards the Holy - means that this book can also display for its readers something of the "light that surprises", the "discovery of grace", the kind of spiritual awakening that New Testament authors call metanoia."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The Stanzaic Poems, written by Hadewijch of Antwerp in the 13th century, are a body of 45 lyrical poems in stanzas. They are daring God-talk in the guise of courtly love songs. Hadewijch uses the linguistic style of chivalry but her poems are by no means courtly poetry. She shifts the current meaning of chivalry by transferring its context to a field of meaning focused on God. Because of the view of Minne (=love) that is embodied in them, the Stanzaic Poems are an exponent of the age old tradition of women's songs - of which the Song of Songs is the best known example - and as such they are an expression of a particular manner of keeping company with God: they celebrate a relationship of mutuality between partners equivalent in love. An introductory essay highlights some of the striking points of lovers: the raging desire of 'orewoet': the gentility of humankind's origin. This essay is followed by a rendering of the Stanzaic Poems from Middle-Dutch into Modern English prose. With an introduction by Edward Schillebeeckx.

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Zookeeper's Wife, an ambitious and enlightening work that combines an artist's eye with a scientist's erudition to illuminate, as never before, the magic and mysteries of the human mind. Long treasured by literary readers for her uncommon ability to bridge the gap between art and science, celebrated scholar-artist Diane Ackerman returns with the book she was born to write. Her dazzling new work, An Alchemy of Mind, offers an unprecedented exploration and celebration of the mental fantasia in which we spend our days—and does for the human mind what the bestselling A Natural History of the Senses did for the physical senses. Bringing a valuable female perspective to the topic, Diane Ackerman discusses the science of the brain as only she can: with gorgeous, immediate language and imagery that paint an unusually lucid and vibrant picture for the reader. And in addition to explaining memory, thought, emotion, dreams, and language acquisition, she reports on the latest discoveries in neuroscience and addresses controversial subjects like the effects of trauma and male versus female brains. In prose that is not simply accessible but also beautiful and electric, Ackerman distills the hard, objective truths of science in order to yield vivid, heavily anecdotal explanations about a range of existential questions regarding consciousness, human thought, memory, and the nature of identity.

The Book of Spiritual Poetry By: Rev. Charles E. Pullen One night, the Holy Spirit spoke to Rev. Charles E.
