Born into a wealthy family in Toulouse, Gabrielle de Coignard (ca. 1550-86) married a prominent statesman in 1570. Widowed three years later, with two young daughters to raise, Coignard turned to writing devotional verse to help her cope with her practical and spiritual struggles. Spiritual Sonnets presents the first English translation of 129 of Coignard's highly autobiographical poems, giving us a startlingly intimate view into the life and mind of this Renaissance woman. The sonnets are all written "in the shadow of the Cross" and include elegies, penitential lyrics, Biblical meditations, and more. Rich with emotion, Coignard's poems reveal anguished moments of loneliness and grief as well as ecstatic experiences of mystical union. They also reveal her mastery of sixteenth-century literary conventions and spiritual traditions. This edition, printed in bilingual format with Melanie E. Gregg's translations facing the French originals, will be welcomed by teachers and students of poetry, French literature, women's studies, and religious and Renaissance studies.

The extent to which Shakespeare derived the inspiration for his plays and Sonnets from the Bible has sparked debate for centuries. Although much research has been done on Shakespeare's plays, a comprehensive analysis of his Sonnets has been absent, until now. This book gives a detailed examination of Shakespeare's Sonnets, identifying their underlying spiritual themes at the religious and scriptural levels of interpretation.

Spiritual Sonnets comes in three sections. The first section is biblical. Facts that I believe to be truth: angels, chakras, emotions, faith, love, meditation, and healing are a few. The second section is all about angels and my belief in them. How they can help us in so many ways. Allow them into your life; theyre waiting for you. The third section is the metaphysical of the Old Testament. Please read it, you will understand and learn. Jesus Christ Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior will Pick you up when youve fallen down Show you the way when youve gone astray Carry you in his arms when you cannot walk Enfold you in his arms when others will not Dry your tears and ease your fears Comfort you in his arms when you feel death is near Comfort you in your grief and sorrows Fill your heart with peace and joy upon the morrow Jesus fills your heart with all his love for you When youre feeling empty inside and when invited in Jesus will enter your heart, your soul, make his home therein
