Invocations to the Light is a loving guide to re-awaken our connection to our True Selves. Like prayer and meditation, invocations teach, inspire, and add to the Light we carry into the world. By consciously invoking the help and guidance of Higher Beings, we acknowledge their presence, reach up to where the help resides, and bring it down to where the help is needed. Invocations are personal tools for uniting with spiritual masters and asking for the blessings we need in life. In contacting our inner Source, we learn to use our power, our voice, and our heart to call upon the Love and Light of Spirit to work with us, especially in these times of personal and planetary expansion.

Saint Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, espoused the ideal of becoming "contemplatives in action." He was convinced that contemplation (the deep awareness and appropriation of the unconditional love of God) should affect our actions, and that our actions need to be brought back to contemplation. These five dimensions of the spiritual life: (1) the Holy Eucharist, (2) spontaneous prayer, (3) the Beatitudes, (4) partnership with the Holy Spirit, and (5) the contemplative life itself, generally do not develop simultaneously or even in parallel ways. Some develop very quickly, but do not achieve significant depth; while others develop quite slowly, but seem to be almost unending in the depth of wisdom, trust, hope, virtue, and love they engender. The best way of explaining this is to look at each of the pillars individually. Before doing this, however, it is indispensable for each of us to acknowledge (at least intellectually) the fundamental basis for Christian contemplation, namely, the unconditional Love of God. Jesus taught us to address God as Abba. If God really is Abba; if His love is like the father of the prodigal son; if Jesus' passion and Eucharist are confirmations of that unconditional Love; if God really did so love the world that He sent His only begotten Son into the world not to condemn us, but to save us and bring us to eternal life (Jn 3:16-19); if nothing really can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus (Rm 8:31-39); and if God really has prepared us "to grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ's love, and experience this love which surpasses all understanding, so that we may attain to the fullness of God Himself" (Eph 3:18-20), then God's love is unconditional, and it is, therefore, the foundation for unconditional trust and unconditional hope. There can be nothing more important than contemplating, affirming, appropriating, and living in this Unconditional Love. This is the purpose of contemplation; indeed, the purpose of the spiritual life itself.

There is a quiet peaceful center of love, wisdom and strength that lives in the human heart and soul. Yet often we disconnect from deeper values and meaning. We become so busy we tend to forget what our purpose is and that we have Spiritual Aid. Living a life of faith is difficult if not impossible without a daily connection to our inner-selves. As our lives become busier and busier it is imperative that we take time to regularly focus on what is most important so that we may more powerfully participate in our own lives. Prayer is the ancient and sacred practice of talking with God, communing with the Divine. As we consciously seek God, God is revealed to us. Undreamed of possibilities emerge from these dialogues.

The Disciples at Table! The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is about to enter its third century of worship, evangelism and Christian worship. This book is a snapshot of their Table practice: its origins, forms, prayers, and ecumenical development. Single-minded pioneers and advocates of Eucharistic Table fellowship each Sunday, the Disciples forged a unique experience of worship within the restorationist paradigm. What did this worship look like? A free tradition, explicitly "non-liturgical," these Christian communities were open to the directives of the Scriptures and the inspiration of the Spirit. There were no official texts. Yet there was a plethora of worship books and aids, in effect unofficial texts, operating to guide, inform and develop the Disciples' understanding of the Lord's Table and their worship. For the first time these devotional books have been uncovered and studied, revealing something of the deeper influences behind Disciples practice, the common lines of thought and ritual that unknowingly bind the communities, and the difficulties that have emerged in light of ongoing ecumenical worship and research.
