From the award-winning and critically-acclaimed author of Pumpkinflowers, the never-before-told story of the mysterious "Arab Section": the Jewish-"Arab" spies who, under deep cover in Beirut as refugees, helped the new State of Israel win the War of Independence. In his third non-fiction book, Matti Friedman introduces us to four unknown young men who are caught up in the fraught events surrounding the birth of Israel in 1948 and drawn into secret lives, becoming the nucleus of Israel's intelligence service. The tiny, amateur unit known as the "Arab Section" was conceived during WWII by British spies and by Jewish militia leaders in Palestine. Consisting of Jews from Arab countries who could pass as Arabs, it was meant to gather intelligence and carry out sabotage and assassinations. When the first Jewish-Arab war erupted in 1948 and Palestinian refugees began fleeing the fighting, a small number of Section agents disguised as refugees joined the exodus. They fled to Beirut, where they spent the next two years under cover, sending messages back to Israel over a radio antenna disguised as a clothesline. Of the dozen men in the unit at the war's beginning, five were caught and executed. Espionage, John le Carré once wrote, is the "secret theater of our society." Spies of No Country is not just a spy story, but a surprising window into the nature of Israel--a country that sees itself as belonging to the story of Europe, but where more than half of the population is native to the Middle East. Starring complicated characters with slippery identities moving in the shadow of great events, Spies of No Country tells a very different story about what Israel is and how it was created.

At a time when America debates its values and the world braces for religious war, Bruce Feiler, author of the New York Times bestsellers Walking the Bible and Abraham, travels ten thousand miles through the heart of the Middle East—Israel, Iraq, and Iran—and examines the question: Is religion tearing us apart ... or can it bring us together? Where God Was Born combines the adventure of a wartime chronicle, the excitement of an archaeological detective story, and the insight of personal spiritual exploration. Taking readers to biblical sites not seen by Westerners for decades, Feiler's journey uncovers little-known details about the common roots of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and affirms the importance of the Bible in today's world. In his intimate, accessible style, Feiler invites readers on a never-in-a-lifetime experience: Israel Feiler takes a perilous helicopter dive over Jerusalem, treks through secret underground tunnels, and locates the spot where David toppled Goliath. Iraq After being airlifted into Baghdad, Feiler visits the Garden of Eden and the birthplace of Abraham, and makes a life-threatening trip to the rivers of Babylon. Iran Feiler explores the home of the Bible's first messiah and uncovers the secret burial place of Queen Esther. In Where God Was Born, Feiler discovers that at the birth of Western religion, all faiths drew from one another and were open to coexistence. Feiler's bold realization is that the Bible argues for interfaith harmony. It cannot be ceded to one side in the debate over values. Feiler urges moderates to take back the Bible and use its powerful voice as a beacon of shared ideals. In his most ambitious work to date, Bruce Feiler has written a brave, uplifting story that stirs the deepest chords of our time. Where God Was Born offers a rare, universal vision of God that can inspire different faiths to an allegiance of hope.

Spies of Promise is a Christian spy thriller about the 12 Hebrew spies sent to reconnoiter the promised land of Canaan after Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt. The story is told by a CIA officer who learned the story from a source he debriefed in the Middle East. The source tells the story from the point of view of Joshua who, at 100 years old, relays the tale to his grandson who does not know the details outside of what was told in the Bible in the book of Numbers chapters 13-14. The story in the Bible is only is about 2 pages long. This novel chronicalizes the 40 day intelligence operation where the 12 spies encounter other spies, assassins, prostitutes, sorcerers, demons and angels. Both Satan and Moses are important secondary characters in this story. There are powerful life lessons at the end of this book which help people navigate through their own personal wilderness. This exciting novel provides a fictionalized account of Joshua's mission but contains spycraft and situations which could have come from news headlines in 2015. There are some powerful metaphors in the story about faith. The themes of love and redemption are deeply woven throughout this thriller. According to the Bible, the Hebrews were ultimately disobedient, not believing the word of God and failed to reach the Promise Land. The Bible tells of their punishment after the mission in Canaan where they are forced to wander in the wilderness of the Sinai for 40 years (one year for each day that the 12 spies were on their mission). The narrative in the Bible does not discuss what happened during those 40 days; this is that story. At the end of Joshua's tale, the story returns to the present where the narrator provides ten spiritual points to take away, mainly not to have a wilderness state of mind like the Hebrews. Although the Hebrews where freed, they still needed to free themselves from the psychological bondage of so many years of slavery. Many people are in their own personal wilderness of the past by reliving past hurt and traumas. This thrilling work of historical fiction was written from a God-consciousness point of view. Perhaps this fictionalized account of Joshua's spy mission can lead some people to gain more perspective about their lives and increase the faith in their hearts.
