DOWNLOAD EBOOK →This volume illustrates and analyses the stereotypes and prejudices underlying the social representation of violence against women as it is narrated and described in Italy by the press and by court judgements. After a theoretical reflection on the role of culture and socialisation in reproducing the conditions underlying gender-based violence and its normalisation, and after reconstructing the historical evolution of gender roles and the stages of women’s condition, the book presents the results of a sociological and of a socio-linguistic analysis on a vast corpus of 16,715 newspaper articles published by fifteen Italian newspapers on gender crimes (specifically: femicide; sexual violence; domestic violence; women trafficking) . The chapters analyze how national, macro-regional and local Italian press narrates violence against women but they also analyze a repertoire of 283 judicial sentences. The results show a clear tendency to redistribute the responsibilities of these crimes between the perpetrator and the victim, leading not only to secondary victimization but also to tertiary victimization, affecting the quality of Italian institutions as well as the democratic fiber of the nation. The volume finally includes a compendium of the best and the worst practices found in the corpuses of sentences and newspapers’ articles and a set of recommendations addressed to the institutional actors and journalists for a correct representation of gender-based violence, free from those stereotypes and prejudices that violate the dignity of male violence’ victims and prevent them from accessing justice.

It also sheds light on discourses of contestation on the part of family activists, men’s rights campaigners and divorced fathers’ groups. Two counter-discourses emerge. The first is what the author terms an ‘ideology narrative’, for which discourses built around the conceptual category of ‘gender’ normalize simplistic representations of relationships between men and women. The second is a ‘female violence discourse’, which sheds light on under-represented aggressor-victim relations and modifies dominant representations of femininity and masculinity. The author argues that integrating these two discourses into public debates helps to reappropriate the complexity and biological dimensions of (violent) relationships between men and women, often overshadowed by gender/feminist perspectives. In this way, she concludes, we can address neglected social issues that contribute to violence beyond gender. Feminism, Violence, and Representation in Modern Italy traces the use of the word “femminicidio” (or “femicide”) as a tool to mobilize Italian feminists, particularly the Union of Women in Italy (UDI). Based on nearly two years of fieldwork among feminist activists, Giovanna Parmigiani takes a broad look at the many ways in which violence inflects the lives of women in Italy. From unchallenged gendered grammar rules to the representation of women as victims, Parmigiani examines the devaluing of women’s contribution to their communities through the words and experiences of the women she interviews. Violent behavior is analysed on individual, relational, socio-cultural and community levels, considering also the main theoretical approaches (feminist, social, psychological and psychodynamic).The literature analysed the effectiveness of treatment programs (Gondolf, 2004; WHO, 2007; Aldarondo, 2009; Gondolf, 2011), but rarely representations of operators working with violent men.In an ecological perspective, the research aimed at exploring how stakeholders and professional of domestic violence system represented the perpetrators and their motivation to adherence to the intervention programs. Fifty Focalized Narrative Interviews (Arcidiacono, 2016) were collected and analysed by Grounded Theory Method (Corbin, Strauss, 2008).The preliminary analysis highlighted that perpetrator is described as fragile, narcissists (structured power on the maintenance of the oppressed), seducers and manipulators (even with operators), with difficulties in communication and thought (acting-out), often victims of assisted and/or direct violence during childhood, low tolerance and often with other addictions (alcohol, drugs and gambling).In particular, the female workers often appear to be resigned to the assessment of a possible change of the perpetrators, but they propose the fatherhood identity as a motivating factor to create insight into the need for behaviour change, as suggested by the more recent literature fatherhood (Stanley et al., 2012)The research was carried out within the framework of the.
