Gender Issues in Scandinavian Music Education: From Stereotypes to Multiple Possibilities introduces much-needed updates to research and teaching philosophies that envision new ways of considering gender diversity in music education. This volume of essays by Scandinavian contributors looks beyond the dominant Anglo-American lens while confronting a universal need to resist and rethink the gender stereotypes that limit a young person’s musical development. Addressing issues at all levels of music education—from primary and secondary schools to conservatories and universities— topics discussed include: the intersection of social class, sexual orientation, and teachers’ beliefs; gender performance in the music classroom and its effects on genre and instrument choice; hierarchical inequalities reinforced by power and prestige structures; strategies to fulfill curricular aims for equality and justice that meet the diversity of the classroom; and much more! Representing a commitment to developing new practices in music education that subvert gender norms and challenge heteronormativity, Gender Issues in Scandinavian Music Education fills a growing need to broaden the scope of how gender and equality are situated in music education—in Scandinavia and beyond.

Certain lines define a movie. Marlene Dietrich in Morocco: “Anyone who has faith in me is a sucker.” Too, there are lines that fit actor and character. Mae West in I’m No Angel: “I’m very quick in a slow way.” Jane Fonda in California Suite: “Fit? You think I look fit? What an awful shit you are. I look gorgeous.” From the classics to the grade–B slasher movies, over 11,000 quotes are arranged by over 900 subjects, like accidents, double entendres, eyes (and other body parts!), ice cream, luggage, parasites, and ugliness. Each quote gives the movie title, production company, year of release, speaker of the line, and, when appropriate, a comment putting the quote in context.

After her newest lodger, Arran, takes the room, Tess finds his salaciously detailed diary, which chronicles his infatuation with a beautiful stranger. The diary, which appears harmless at first, slowly takes a darker, more menacing tone with each new entry. Is this a crush or an obsession? Her compulsion to know the truth leads to Tess shadowing Arran through the streets of London, hoping to catch a glimpse of this unnamed woman. And as she continues to peruse his diary, she can’t help but notice the similarities between the woman on the pages and herself, leaving her to wonder, Who has truly been watching whom?

The two fictional characters, Jake and Duke, engage in a verbal joust regarding the supposed problems caused by gays, criminals, welfare, and women. Jake's suggestions to deal with these problems are to get laws passed which would allow the authorities an option in dealing with rapists, to execute gangbangers convicted of murder after giving them just one legal appeal, to give no child support to unmarried mothers, to allow Puerto Rico to end its ties with the United States and for them to become partners with South America. Jake would have laws passed to keep the United States an English speaking country by ending all bilingual programs, and to hold the Mexican government liable for all the medical bills generated by Mexican illegals which the hospitals in the Southwest have to absorb. He would have the United States pay the Mexican government room and board to house American prisoners so the taxpayers won't be obliged to construct new jails at an enormous cost. He would have a law passed to make it mandatory for a woman who has had an abortion to put a small cross on her forehead for each abortion, using permanent cosmetics. He would have the authorities turn convicted drug dealers into drug addicts so they could feel the pain they cause to the users. Jake's off-the-wall suggestions are countered by his long time friend, Duke, who suggests more humane treatment for those in need, instead of the barbaric proposals made by Jake.

Paige Avery had been deep, undercover with her brother, James. Their target had been spotted, but something went wrong. The bullets came from everywhere, killing most of the people in the room. Sent to retrieve them, Rebel Marshall popped in and took the unconscious Page and James back to her home to recover. If Paige and James hadn’t already been immortal, they would have died for sure. As it was, Paige was too weak to shift, and until she could, it would be a long recovery. Heath found James in the barn. The man seemed friendly enough, but Heath didn’t trust strangers easily. Heath was ready to go about his business when he smelled the boy. The boy was hurt and hiding it well, that is until he crumpled from the pain. Heath called for Rodney, and they got the boy back to the house. Paige shouldn’t have been out of bed, but her concern for her nephew had her moving slowly. Told to sit in a chair before she hurt herself further, Paige caught Heath’s scent and realized he was her mate, and a string of curses flew out of her mouth in seven different languages.
