Snakes are very enigmatic creatures. They are feared, hated, and maligned. Yet probably less than fifteen percent of the world's approximately 3,000 snake species, are venomous. Further breaking these percentages down, in North America there are approximately 150 species of snakes. Of these, only some 20 species are venomous. These venomous snakes can be broken down into four groups: Rattlesnakes, Copperheads, Water Moccasin/Cottonmouths, and Coral Snakes. Texas has all four of these groups of venomous snakes. Hernán Moreno Hinojosa is a retired Law Enforcement Officer and Author. Hernán became interested in collecting folk stories when he was only 16 and still living in Hebbronville, Texas. Hernán would frequently accompany his father to La Florida Ranch, which was leased for cattle production at the time. While out on the ranch, he became greatly interested in snakes and began writing stores about them. Some were true and some were folklore. Hernán retired from the Metro Police in 2008. He currently divides his time between their Houston home and their South Texas ranch with his wife, Herlinda Garza. They recently celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary. They are blessed with four children; three girls, one son, and one grandson. He is still collecting ghost stories and writing. His newest books, Lechuza and The Deceiver are available in all bookstores.

“We travel the world,” writes Gregory McNamee, “and wherever we go there are snake stories to entertain us.” Here are some fifty diverse and unusual accounts of serpents from cultures across time and around the globe: snakes that talk, jump, and dance; snakes that transform into other creatures; snakes that just . . . watch. Many selections are drawn from the rich oral traditions of peoples in every clime that supports reptiles, from the Akimel O’odham of North America to the Mensa Bet-Abrahe of Africa to the Mungkjan of Australia. Included as well are such writings as prayers from the Egyptian Book of the Dead, fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm, a poem by Emily Dickinson, and a journal entry by Charles Darwin. What we read about snakes in The Serpent’s Tale is just as fascinating for what it says about us, for there always will be something primordial about our connection to them. That bond is evident in these stories: in how we associate snakes with nature’s elemental forces, how we attribute special qualities to their eyes and skin, and how they preside over all phases of our existence, from creation to death to resurrection.

Amusing, entertaining, and exciting are the words I use to describe the content of this book. I have told this story and a few others with the same main character (i.e., Inspector Rabbit) to my three children at bedtime and have put them to sleep while capturing their imagination and sense of curiosity. This story reminds children that all of us have something to give and offer to others if and when given the opportunity.
