Too often, the lives and works of authors who called Upstate New York home are overshadowed by the icons of New York City. Resting among Us uncovers the region’s rich literary heritage through Steven Huff’s journeys to the graves of writers both famous and celebrated as well as those that have been forgotten. While most Upstate residents are aware that Mark Twain’s grave is in Elmira and that James Fenimore Cooper’s is in Cooperstown, many people don’t realize a noted author may be buried in their local cemetery. For instance, Paul Bowles is buried in Lakemont, John Gardner in Batavia, Rod Serling in Interlaken, John Burroughs in Roxbury, and Adelaide Crapsey in Rochester. Interwoven with these remarkable literary lives are the connected stories of the region’s history and Huff’s own encounters and friendships with some of the writers included in the book. With directions to each author’s grave, as well as photographs of the graves and authors themselves, Resting among Us is the perfect companion for your own enlightening literary pilgrimage.

Glenn Curtiss (1878–1930) was a self-taught aeronautical engineer, a self-made industrialist, and one of the first airplane pilots, the model for “Tom Swift.” C. R. Roseberry’s biography begins with Curtiss’s years in Hammondsport, New York, his experiments with designing and learning to fly his own airplanes, and his many “firsts” in aviation history. Establishing one of the first aviation schools, Curtiss also developed a highly successful aviation company and designed one of the most popular early American planes—the Curtiss JN-4 (the “Jenny”). More than just a biography, this is also a well-documented history of the development of aviation and the key figures associated with it during the first three crucial decades of this century. Through an examination of Curtiss’s dealings with people such as Alexander Graham Bell, his original partner, and Wilbur and Orville Wright, his most important rivals, Roseberry provides insight into the overall development of flight in America. Aviation enthusiasts, historians, those interested in American technology and industry, and all who enjoy a good story will welcome this book.

“Out of the Shadows” follows Caroline York in the 1760s. Newly-arrived from Ireland, she settles upon her uncle’s farm to administer it. When they were besieged by unsolicited intrusions, Caroline repels them, only to suffer the mysterious death of her uncle, after which she herself is kidnapped by a surly and arrogant British captain. Her daughter and husband conspire to find her. They enlist support from the one-remaining French garrison in the region and a friendly Iroquois chieftain. Caroline is finally rescued. In turn, she vows to literally clean up the New York frontier by seeking to change the status-quo between those with power and those held in subservience. Armed with a beguiling wit and charm, she becomes the mistress of deception and cunning as she prevails upon some of the major power brokers of the day. In due course, she brings about needed changes in the New York socio-political structure which helped transform the colony into the standard-bearer of 18th century social justice, so carving out her own legacy.

The three cycles of sermons included here provide a spiritual geography, an announcement of the gospel set in New York State. The sermons were given life in the vibrant life of Asbury First United Methodist Church, Rochester, New York, over several years beginning in 2000. The collection is meant to exemplify a thematic form of preaching that addresses and creates a collective consciousness in the life a community. One series is set on "A Village Green." Another invites those along the Finger Lakes to travel "Once More to the Lake." The third traverses the major cities of the state, and their capacity to become "An Empire of the Spirit." The sermons here try to unfold an interpretation of Scripture by engaging local settings to produce a geography of the Spirit.
