I started writing articles when I was twenty-two years old - what did I know? Four short years earlier my A Level history teacher had called me semi-illiterate after I handed in a sloppily written essay. However, youth is wasted on the young and wisdom is wasted on the old. With childlike enthusiasm I set about publishing my thoughts and ideas. As age tried to crow-bar a little wisdom into me, the topics I focused on and the beliefs I formulated changed. So too, did my writing. For this book I have cherry-picked thirty-five articles, spanning twenty-three years. They are the musings of an insomniac's mind. I hope they shed a little light on how I have bumbled along the way and endeavoured to create my own version of Shu-Ha-Ri.

At the beginning of the 15th century a young Okinawan boy is initiated into the martial arts of China by a strange visitor. The boy records what he is taught as best he can in order to both remember the knowledge and pass it on. The book he creates is continued by successive generations and grows into a secret family heritage, passed down through four hundred years of Okinawan and Japanese history, and a witness to the development of the art and then the way of karate from ancient times to modern.A young American boy, David Cody, has the unique opportunity to spend his early childhood and youth within the quiet halls of a Japanese karate dojo, raised in the traditions and language of the Japanese martial arts. He returns to the United States for college, but in a twist of events finds that his martial ability may not be all he thought it was. David returns to Japan in a quest for the truth of his training and runs into a destiny he never expected. David searches the lives of karate masters from ancient China, through Okinawa and Japan and even to the United States for some clue to the roots and reality of karate and traces the history of that martial art through all of its incarnations, first as a fighting art, then a philosophical discipline and finally a Western tournament sport and Hollywood media event. But there is a sinister side to what David finds and David comes upon a mystery that will change his life.?The Art and the Way? begins with the story of Peiching, an Okinawan who spends the first half of his life in China studying Chinese Chuan Fa, the martial art made famous by ancient priests, then returns to his homeland only to find it occupied by the Satsuma, brutal Japanese conquerors.Useishi, Peiching?s accidental disciple, returns to China in a quest to find his teacher?s teacher and continue his training at the root source of the knowledge. In 19th century Okinawa the karate master Shuhari Kensho and his wife, Masayo, equaled only by her husband in her knowledge of the martial arts, stand in the middle of another changing Okinawa, a country torn between two opposing forces, on the one hand trying to hang onto its own ancient culture and on the other giving over completely to the Japanese who have controlled the country for almost 300 years. Shuhari sees this change clearly in the development of his own karate. Once a secret fighting discipline, it now seems to have become more of a philosophy of life than a martial art.Muratani Takeshi comes of age in the early part of the 20th century, at the beginning of the Japanese drive to conquer Asia, in a family steeped in the traditions of karate. From his Okinawan father he inherits the techniques and philosophies of the Okinawan martial arts and from his Japanese mother the arts and obligations of Japan. Now, as the world moves toward the end of his century Muratani sees his family martial art being turned into little more than a game and, to make things worse, it is up to him to choose a successor to pass on the secrets of his family?s art before his own death. With a son who is the worst possible of candidates, he is faced with a dilemma at the end of his life that he would rather avoid altogether.Through the lives of these people ?The Art and the Way? tells the story of the development of modern karate and opens the doors to a hidden world of masters and students, conquerors and vanquished, and secrets and lies that few humans have ever entered or even realize exist.

What would you like to obtain from your research and practice of an Okinawan martial art? For an academic, it would be to obtain historical and cultural facts and details. For a practitioner, it would be to gain expertise in the combative skills. If you’re interested in both, this first of a three-volume anthology (paperback) is assembled for your convenience to facilitate your endeavors. These volumes assemble a wealth of material originally published during the two decades when the Journal of Asian Martial Arts was in print. Hundreds of pages and photographs present the richness of Okinawan martial traditions, from the original combatives to those influenced by Chinese and mainland Japanese martial art styles. The variety of topics shown in the table of contents indicate the depth and breath in the chapters, along with the authors who are well-known for their meticulous research and practical skills in specific arts. These three volumes dive deep into the history and culture of Okinawan martial arts. You’ll find coverage of the actual artifacts—the material culture related to weaponry and training methods. Instructions from the masters details both open-hand techniques as well as with weapons. The chapters offer insights into “the lives of many masters over the past few centuries, giving the raison d’être for these unique fighting arts—their reason for being. Many streams of arts have contributed to the martial traditions found on the small island: Naha-te, Shuri-te, Fukien White Crane, Shorin, Goju, Motobu, Shotokan, Isshin, Kyokushin, Pwang Gai Noon, Shito, Uechi, and the list continues … Along with the various styles come the associated training methods, such as conditioning exercises with weights and creatively designed apparatus, such as the punching post (makiwara), or stone lever and stone padlockshaped weights. Some become battle-hardened by active and passive breaking of objects (tameshiwari), including wooden boards, baseball bats, rocks, and ice. The extensive use of weaponry is found in many Okinawan styles, often associated with their farming and fishing occupations. Such a blend of history and culture make the Okinawan fighting traditions a fascinating field of study. Besides being such vital sources of information, these three volumes will prove enjoyable reading and permanent at-hand reference sources in your library.
