Somewhere in the vaults of the bank of Cox and Co., at Charing Cross, there is a travel-worn and battered tin dispatchbox with my name, John H. Watson, M. D., Late Indian Army, painted upon the lid. It is crammed with papers, nearly all of which are records of cases to illustrate the curious problems which Mr. Sherlock Holmes had at various times to examine. Some, and not the least interesting, were complete failures, and as such will hardly bear narrating, since no final explanation is forthcoming. A problem without a solution may interest the student, but can hardly fail to annoy the casual reader. Among these unfinished tales is that of Mr. James Phillimore, who, stepping back into his own house to get his umbrella, was never more seen in this world. No less remarkable is that of the cutter Alicia, which sailed one spring morning into a small patch of mist from where she never again emerged, nor was anything further ever heard of herself and her crew. A third case worthy of note is that of Isadora Persano, the well-known journalist and duellist, who was found stark staring mad with a match box in front of him which contained a remarkable worm said to be unknown to science. Apart from these unfathomed cases, there are some which involve the secrets of private families to an extent which would mean consternation in many exalted quarters if it were thought possible that they might find their way into print. I need not say that such a breach of confidence is unthinkable, and that these records will be separated and destroyed now that my friend has time to turn his energies to the matter. There remain a considerable residue of cases of greater or less interest which I might have edited before had I not feared to give the public a surfeit which might react upon the reputation of the man whom above all others I revere. In some I was myself concerned and can speak as an eye-witness, while in others I was either not present or played so small a part that they could only be told as by a third person. The following narrative is drawn from my own experience. It was a wild morning in October, and I observed as I was dressing how the last remaining leaves were being whirled from the solitary plane tree which graces the yard behind our house. I descended to breakfast prepared to find my companion in depressed spirits, for, like all great artists, he was easily impressed by his surroundings. On the contrary, I found that he had nearly finished his meal, and that his mood was particularly bright and joyous, with that somewhat sinister cheerfulness which was characteristic of his lighter moments.

"I have heard the whisper of death. I have heard it in the wind. Someone will die. Murdered, and soon. Only you, Mr. Sherlock Holmes, can stop it." The man who uttered these words had forced his way up the stairs and into 221B Baker Street. At first I thought he was merely mad. He was dirty, disheveled and only somewhat coherent. Yet there was in his eyes and burning intelligence, a passion, and an unholy fear. "Who is going to die?" asked Holmes. "That has not been revealed to me. All I know is that you, Sherlock Holmes, must save that life." Holmes was about to ask more questions when the miserable creature turned and fled down the stairs and out onto the street. His words were prophetic, and Sherlock Holmes would be implicated in a murder. This story, the fiftieth in the series of New Sherlock Holmes Mysteries, is a tribute to the original story, The Problem of Thor Bridge. Did you ever wonder whatever became of Neil Gibson and Miss Dunbar after Holmes solved the problem of Thor Bridge? Now you will find out. Click, purchase your copy, download and enjoy MORE SHERLOCK.

Is Sherlock Holmes really as rational as he seems? He talks about the importance of reasoning and logic, but why then does he sometimes seem like a "strange Buddha"? On the other hand, why in The Sign of the Four does Watson smash a Buddha? What is going on in The Sign of the Four, that strange tale of Empire? What is going on in all the original sixty stories in "the canon"? In this study of the stories, Sheldon Goldfarb explores questions like these, from the significance of the eggs in "Thor Bridge" to the reason Watson keeps leaving Holmes for an insubstantial wife. What meanings lurk beneath the surface of these detective stories? Why is there an obsession with Napoleon in this story or an article on free trade in this other? Can we find answers to these questions? Perhaps. In any case, in this collection of essays (or "Musings") on each of the 60 stories, Dr. Goldfarb, an award-nominated mystery writer himself and the holder of a PhD in English literature, light-heartedly tries out a variety of perspectives, allowing readers to come to their own conclusions about such matters as the nature of the angel in "A Case of Identity" or the reason Holmes abandons his magnifying glass for binoculars in "Silver Blaze." Who brings binoculars to a horse race? Indeed.

An invitation to take lunch at the Great Western Hotel at Paddington station leads Sherlock Holmes into a baffling mystery. Who is it that is watching every move made by popular journalist, Farringdon Blake, and why? When the trail goes cold in London, Holmes and his friend, Dr Watson, must travel down to Foxwood Grange, Blake's home in rural Oxfordshire, to seek a solution to the mystery there. Sherlock Holmes undertakes one of the strangest adventures of his career when he agrees to investigate the mysterious disappearance of Mr. James Phillimore, who stepped back into his house to get his umbrella and was never seen again. The great detective's inquiries take him down a sometimes-false trail from a home in Surrey to a music hall in London and back again before he finds the astonishing answer to this puzzling problem. In “The Problem of Thor Bridge,” Dr. Watson lists this case as one of Holmes's complete failures. Read “The Adventure of the Magic Umbrella” to find why Watson agreed to his readers with that false report, and what the umbrella had to do with it. This is another thoroughly authentic Holmes story from the author of the widely acclaimed “The Peculiar Persecution of John Vincent Harden,” also available as an e-story, as well as numerous mystery novels.
