ABSRACT: Occupational therapists should be aware that sexuality falls under their domain of practice since sexuality is included in the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (OTPFW) in the category of activities of daily living (ADL). For the purpose of this study the term "sexual expression" will be used to refer to sexuality as a general reference. Sexual expression includes aspects such as sexual function, sexual roles, sexual and gender identity, and the relationships between them. While sexual expression is addressed in the OTPFW it is unknown if occupational therapists within facilities are addressing sexual expression post injury. The purpose of this study is to gather and interpret data regarding if and how various specialty rehabilitation facilities and the occupational therapy staff address sexual expression with patients who have sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) or Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). To gather data, an original survey was created by the authors and was distributed via a web based survey compilation service, called Survey Monkey. The results demonstrate that although some occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants are aware that sexual expression falls under the domain of activities of daily living within the scope of occupational therapy practice, however is evident that treatment does not consist of addressing this matter in the rehabilitation process.
