Set A Course For Freedom is a story of young America on the threshold of revolution. Though the story itself is fictional it is woven into the fabric of actual historic events. The characters are meant to portray the differing personalities and attitudes of those living in that period and the conflicts and difficult choices they had to make. Christopher Hall, the twenty-one year old son of a Maryland fisherman, finds himself drawn into the conflict as his homeland drifts further and further away from Mother England. In this book, the first of a series, Christopher sets out in May of 1774 to find his missing brother-in-law who is a member of the Maryland Committee of Correspondence. Before he can succeed Christopher is captured by a press gang and is forced to serve in the British Navy. The following year, when war between England and the Colonies appears inevitable, Christopher realizes he cannot remain on the British ship. With the aid of a sympathetic shipmate he makes his escape but nearly loses his life in the process. He is saved by Captain Pierce, a blockade runner, and is nursed back to health by the captain’s family. Christopher accompanies Captain Pierce on his next run in an attempt to work his way home. However, a tragic encounter with a British warship forces Captain Pierce to put into port at Newport. There an old friend convinces him to arm his vessel and take up privateering. Christopher joins him in this endeavor which leads to the capture of a British mail packet and information that his brother-in-law, Thomas, is being held prisoner in Boston. They return to Squansett and with the help of local patriots an ingenious rescue is planned and executed. As Christopher is drawn into both adventure and romance he finds he must grapple with several conflicts - between his loyalty to the King and the land of his birth, between his family’s needs at home and the need to go search for his brother-in-law, and between his passions and his upbringing. Subsequent books will describe Christopher’s adventures in America’s infant navy and his growth as a naval officer. Although the U. S. Navy got off to a rather shaky start, it was in the period 1774 to 1812 that we were engaged in our War of Independence, the Quasi-War with France, the war with Tripoli and the second war with Great Britain, the War of 1812. It was this period that produced our first naval heroes and many of the naval traditions still celebrated today. It is my hope the reader will develop an increased appreciation for the people of that period, their struggles and their sacrifices. They set the course for freedom.

Set theory is the mathematics of infinity and part of the core curriculum for mathematics majors. This book blends theory and connections with other parts of mathematics so that readers can understand the place of set theory within the wider context. Beginning with the theoretical fundamentals, the author proceeds to illustrate applications to topology, analysis and combinatorics, as well as to pure set theory. Concepts such as Boolean algebras, trees, games, dense linear orderings, ideals, filters and club and stationary sets are also developed. Pitched specifically at undergraduate students, the approach is neither esoteric nor encyclopedic. The author, an experienced instructor, includes motivating examples and over 100 exercises designed for homework assignments, reviews and exams. It is appropriate for undergraduates as a course textbook or for self-study. Graduate students and researchers will also find it useful as a refresher or to solidify their understanding of basic set theory.

Transform Your Mind. Expand Your Universe. Reach for Mars. Imagine a better tomorrow with interstellar essays and art—drawing on the aspirational futurism that fuels Star Trek, The Martian, and 2001: A Space Odyssey, renowned contemporary artist Camomile Hixon reminds us that by reaching for the stars, we can chase our full potential beyond Earth, while also transforming ourselves and our understanding of the Pale Blue Dot we call home. We stand at the threshold of interplanetary travel: SpaceX rockets are now routinely leaving Earth and NASA’s new Perseverance rover is searching for signs of ancient life on the Red Planet. Not since the moon landing in 1969 has space—or the promise of a transformational future for humankind—felt so close. Do we dare to reach for it? Yearning to know the stars has long united humanity and ignited our imaginations. And while here on Earth we grapple with deep unrest—economic struggle, political upheaval, gender discrimination, pandemics, racial tensions, climate change—the potential of a colony on Mars has sparked a new, universal hope and a heightened sense of collective purpose as we discover our ultimate destiny beyond Earth’s orbit. Celebrating the limitless potential of space and the human spirit, Hixon’s indelible essays and fantastical works of art invite us to imagine a transcendent future where we reach together for absolute freedom, unconditional love, and wellness on our grand quest for world peace. Weaving science, history, art, and philosophy with meditations on higher consciousness inspired by seeing the Earth from Space, Space Nomads is a book of unbridled optimism for the future.

In this volume, political insider Christopher Cross updates his critically acclaimed bestseller with new chapters and important new insights into future education policy. Cross draws on his own experience in Washington, along with research and interviews, to present a highly readable history of federal education policy from WWII to the Obama administration. The book highlights the key players who helped shape federal policy, because as Cross writes in his introduction "policy development is woven of personalities, events, and timing." This fascinating chronicle demonstrates, among other things, how federal policy has been a constant influence on what states and local districts do, especially with respect to students most at-risk.
