Excerpt from Semi-Centennial History of the City of Rochester: With Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of Some of Its Prominent Men and Pioneers This book tells its own story, but a few words with regard to its compilation are deemed appropriate. Its editor or author - for while he is less than the latter he is certainly more than the former has given full credit in the running pages to all those who assisted him by the preparation of complete chapters or of portions of chap ters to any appreciable 'degree. To those who have aided by giving information when it was sought, by confirming previous impressions or by correcting erroneous conclusions, no reference by name is necessary; they will find their satisfaction in the knowledge that their help has been utilised and that they have contributed to the preservation, in this form, of facts that would otherwise grow con stantly more difficult to obtain. With the hope that the volume will stand as an enduring record of Rochester, from the earliest times in which can be found a trace of human life in this locality to the fiftieth birthday of the city, the compiler presents this work to the consideration of his fellow-citizens. In the first half of the nineteenth century, the United States saw both a series of Protestant religious revivals and the dramatic expansion of the marketplace. Although today conservative Protestantism is associated with laissez-faire capitalism, many of the nineteenth-century believers who experienced these transformations offered different, competing visions of the link between commerce and Christianity. Joseph P. Slaughter offers a new account of the interplay between religion and capitalism in American history by telling the stories of the Protestant entrepreneurs who established businesses to serve as agents of cultural and economic reform. Faith in Markets examines three Christian business enterprises and the visions of a Christian marketplace they represented. Shaped by Pietist, Calvinist, and Arminian theologies, each offered different answers to the question of what a moral, Christian market should look like. George Rapp & Associates operated sophisticated textile factories as the business side of the model community the Harmony Society, which practiced communal living in pursuit of a harmonious workforce. The Pioneer Stage Coach Line provided transportation services only six days a week to keep Sunday sacred, attempting to reform society by outcompeting less pious businesses. The publisher Harper & Brothers sought to elevate American culture through commerce by producing virtuous products like lavishly illustrated Bibles. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Faith in Markets explores how the founders and owners of these enterprises infused their faith into their businesses and, in turn, how distinctly religious businesses shaped American capitalism and society.

While many Civil War reference books exist, there is no single compendium that contains important details about the combatant states (and territories) that Civil War researchers can readily access for their work. People looking for information about the organizations, activities, economies, demographics, and prominent personalities of Civil War states and state governments must assemble data from a variety of sources, with many key sources remaining unavailable online. This volume provides a crucial reference book for Civil War scholars and historians, professional or amateur, seeking information about New York during the war. Its principal sources include the Official Records, state adjutant general reports, legislative journals, state and federal legislation, executive speeches and proclamations on the federal and state levels, and the general and special orders issued by the military authorities of both governments, North and South. Designed and organized for easy use, this book can be read in two ways: by individual state, with each chapter offering a stand-alone history of an individual state's war years; or across states, comparing reactions to the same event or solutions to the same problems.

Women Will Evangelize the World "Leadership is influence" John Maxwell Yes, leadership is influence, and women have got it. And behind every great man is a good woman. The woman was created to be a help meet for the man. Man's helper. But when it comes to the devil, woman is a major player of the household. That means if the devil is to destroy Adam's family, he has to get the woman in his corner, agreeing with him. Therefore, when the devil, Satan, got the woman, Eve; Adam was not a match. Satan had the whole family: Adam, Eve, Cain, Abel, and the human race at large. Therefore, Mama Bear, the woman, is angry with her number-one enemy, the devil, and is now ready to evangelize and gather her children across the world, since Jesus has conquered and destroyed the power of the devil. God spoke to me and said, "Women will evangelize the world." Remember, history repeats itself. If the devil used woman to get Adam's family, it is obvious God will use women to gather Adam's family back to God's kingdom.
