Excerpt from Select Specimens of the Theatre of the Hindus, Vol. 1: Translated From the Original Sanscrit; Preface, Dramatic System of the Hindus, Mrichchakati At the same time there are many peculiarities belonging to the Hindu Theatre, which it is necessary that we should know, before we'can safely delineate the history, or propose the theory of the drama. Hitherto the views of all writers upon the subject have been circumscribed by the practice which alone was open to their observation, and their specula tions have been grounded upon the narrow basis, which the dramatic literature of classical antiquity supplied. To this must now be superadded the conclusions that are to be de rived from the dramatic compositions of the Hindus.
