Excerpt from Profits in Poultry Keeping Solved: The Briggs' System and Secrets of Successful Poultry Raising; An Economical, Labor Saving, Profit Assuring System of Poultry Raising In editing and arranging this, the fifth edition of pro fits IN poultry keeping solved, by Edgar Briggs, it seems fitting and proper that I should make an explanation both in justice to Mr. Briggs, the author, and myself. During the entire work of editing this, and former edi tions of the Briggs Book, which is another and familiar name applied to profits IN poultry keeping solved, it has been a constant aim and desire on my part to preserve Mr. Briggs' characteristic style of expressing him self, and not in any wise, at any time, to interpose or make use of my own style in writing. In a few instances, how ever, it has been impossible to avoid such interpositions. To my mind, if I were to have robbed Mr. Briggs' manu script oi that peculiar characteristic style he has of express ing himself in writing, it would have likewise robbed this and other editions of his book, which I have edited, of a large amount of its interest and charm and would have been an injustice to him. Mr. Briggs lays no claims to being a classic writer, and his book therefore should not be compared with this class of books and publications, but is rather the written record of the actual experience of Mr. Briggs upon his own poultry farm, in his words. I have visited Mr. Briggs' poultry farm on several oc casions, and have been given each time carte blanc to go ahead and investigate and find out all I could about his busi ness, and as a result of these visits and investigations I can say without the least hesitancy at all, that Mr. Briggs is con ducting the most practical and profitable poultry plant, for the amount of capital expended for labor and maintenance. That there is in existence today. In other words Mr. Briggs' poultry plant is, without doubt, turning him in a larger pro fit on capital invested than any other poultry business to be found in this or any other country. I would not say this if I were not in possession of information which bears me out fully. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Science and Art of Poultry Culture In placing this volume before the public, the author fully realizes the responsibility that rests upon one who assumes so grave an undertaking. The poultry industry has reached such proportions, the amount of capital invested is growing so rapidly and the ultimate success of the individual is so necessary, that a treatise on the poultry industry should be compiled in the most careful and painstaking manner. Since childhood, poultry has had its allurements for the author, who spent his early years upon a farm. The training given by the high school, the college, the university, and the subsequent practice of the law, has enabled the author to enjoy keenly the fancier's labors and assisted him to fully realize that in the field of poultry culture it is brains, not brawn, that win success. Whatever of merit is to be found in this treatise is largely due to the years of assistance given by various Government experiment stations throughout the United States and Canada, to the efficiency of the poultry journals, to the special treatises of value, to the splendid exhibitions, and to the practical experience of the author as a fancier, each of which has had a share in the general education leading to this volume. This education is opening to the author the possibilities that lie ahead for the student in poultrydom, and the vast extent and importance of this field in the commercial world. To Wm. E. Becker, is due the credit for valuable aid and the excellent chapter upon the "Vices, Enemies, Parasites and Diseases of Poultry and their Proper Treatment," and who in turn wishes to acknowledge the assistance of Salmon and other prominent authorities. The author will feel that this volume will not have been in vain if it shall prove helpful and instructive to poultry lovers, whether they are beginners or veterans in the business or whether they are in college, on a city lot, or on the farm. Excerpt from Poultry Breeding and Management The remarkable development of poultry culture during the past two decades is one of the outstanding features of American agriculture. Twenty years ago the possibilities of poultry-keeping as an industry were scarcely dreamed of. While it does not yet receive the consideration it deserves - far from it - nevertheless it has made immense gains both in popular recognition and in production. This has been brought about by a better realization of the pro ductive value of the hen. The idea of fuss and feathers, long associated with the keeping of fowls, has gradually given way to the idea of a poultry industry whose first and only business, as an industry, is the production of eggs and meat. Excerpt from American Poultry Culture The object of this volume is to furnish reliable and practical information on the profitable care and management of poultry. I have endeavored to take the reader, presumably a beginner, into the field of practical poultry work, telling him what to do, and how and when to do it. I have catered especially to those who desire to keep only a small flock of fowls for pleasure or profit, but most of the matter contained herein will also apply to poultry keeping on a more extensive scale. In order to make this treatise as brief and yet as comprehensive as possible, everything of a theoretical or imaginative nature has been omitted, as well as all unnecessary things. I have made use of only valuable and practical facts, which are the result of my personal experience in the handling of fowls on both a large and a small scale. This is, essentially, a business book for busy people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Poultry Secrets Revealed: The Most Complete Book on Poultry Raising Ever Written Poultry raising is the biggest business on earth. Government statistics - incomplete as they are - prove that the poultry industry of the world surpasses every manufacturing business. Cotton is no longer king. Beef, pork and mutton are left far in the rear. Wheat was passed long ago; and even King Corn will be found in second place when the poultry industry is properly tabulated. And this great industry is a profitable business, giving better returns for the money invested than any other line of legitimate trade. It has been proven over and again that the cost of producing' poultry meat is no greater, pound for pound, than that of producing beef, pork or mutton. At the same time the market reports, month by month, show that the selling prices are overwhelmingly in favor of the poultryman. The live weight prices for the best grades of poultry run on the average from two to three times as much as the highest prices paid for the best grades of cattle, hogs or sheep; while in the lower grades the difference is still greater.
