Excerpt from Scherzer Rolling Lift Bridges The Essential Requirements of a Movable Bridge Are 1. The bridge must be absolutely safe for all traffic cross ing it and for traffic using the navigable channel. 2. The bridge must cause the least possible delay to the traffic crossing it and to the traffic using the navigable channel. 3. The bridge should provide the widest possible navi gable channel at a minimum cost. 4. Economy of first cost of the bridge, economy of opera tion and economy of maintenance. 5. Economy of space required for the site and operation of the bridge. 6. The bridge must not encroach on the adjacent dock space. 7. The bridge should provide one ample, unobstructed navigable channel in the middle of the waterway. 8. The main structural moving parts of the bridge should be few and simple. 9. The bridge should move with the least possible fric tion because of its comparatively great weight. Io. The operating machinery, locks and equipment of the bridge should be few and simple. II. The bridge should be very rapid in operation. 12. When open, the bridge should form a barrier closing the highway. 13. The bridge should be as rigid as a fixed bridge, under the heaviest moving loads for both highway and railway traffic. I4. The bridge should have pleasing and artistic outlines. Excerpt from Plate-Girder Railway Bridges The great majority of bridges on a line of railway are short-span plate-girder bridges. This book is intended to help those young engineers who, joining an engineers office for the first time, find themselves engaged in this class of work. All complicated calculations have been avoided and the object in view has been to help the student or pupil to design a bridge of this kind efficiently, cheaply, simply, and in accordance with modern practice. The theoretical knowledge required is small, and an attempt has been made not to enlarge on this part of the subject more than absolutely necessary. Practical details with regard to construction and erection, together with particulars of market sizes of plates, &c., have been given as far as possible. A chapter has been given to specifications for steel and iron, and to some notes on the treatment of these metals in the manufacture of bridge work, accompanied by some remarks on the working stresses to be adopted in these materials. Excerpt from Continuous Concrete Bridges Only single bearings are required at interior supports of continuous bridges, materially reducing the width of piers compared to simple spans. Cost of the substructure is thereby reduced; obstruction to stream flow is minimized and the tendency to scour resulting from large piers is lessened. Continuous bridges require fewer expansion joints, which reduces first cost slightly and the expense of maintaining joints. In a well designed continuous girder bridge, the depth of sections follows closely the moment requirements, varying from a minimum at the center of spans to a maximum at the supports. The effect of dead load on the design is reduced accordingly. The variation of section from center of spans to sup ports is also favorable to the stress requirements.
