In presenting this most important subject for the consideration of the people of God, we invite the candid and prayerful attention of all who have ears to hear. It is well understood by thousands that the great disappointment of the Advent believers arose from the fact that they believed the cleansing of the sanctuary to be the burning of the earth, or some event to transpire at the second advent of the Lord Jesus; and as they could clearly establish the fact that the 2300 days would terminate in the autumn of 1844, they looked with the full assurance of faith and hope for the glorious appearing of the Son of God at that time. Painful and grievous was the disappointment; and while the heart of the trusting was bowed with sorrow, numbers were not wanting who openly denied the hand of God in the Advent movement, and made utter shipwreck of their faith. As the subject of the sanctuary of the Bible involves the most important facts connected with our disappointment, it is worthy of the serious attention of all who wait the consolation of Israel. Those who have any interest in the past Advent movement, cannot be otherwise than deeply interested in the question of our disappointment. To examine this question with candor and fairness, and to set forth the reasons why their expectations were not realized, is the object of this work.

In this pivotal Bible study by Adventist pioneer and scholar John Nevins (Andrews), questions about what really happened in 1844 and whether or not the "Investigative Judgment" really exists are answered. "The Great Disappointment" of 1844, when thousands of believers waited expectantly for Jesus to come, is carefully examined in the light of Scripture. With his typical carefulness, J. N. Andrews examines why the expectations of the Millerites and other Second Advent believers were not realized on October 22, 1844. Andrews also explains the dream of Hiram Edson, which was accepted by many of the believers as the explanation for why Christ didn't return on that day. Hiram Edson's dream, which laid the groundwork for Seventh-day Adventist beliefs about Christ's ministry in the heavenly sanctuary today, is also explained in this book, which was first printed many years ago on the Washington Hand Press.

Christ has revealed His plans about the reward of the righteous and the final disposition of evildoers inside the pages of the Bible. The Most High has assured us in His word that the root and branches of sin will be consumed into smoke and ashes - evil shall not rise the second time. "How does the rest of the Bible relate to Genesis 1 and 2? Do the various biblical authors portray creation theologies that align or diverge? In this volume, the first of two, ten scholars--each addressing a different section, genre or topic from the Old Testament--grapple seriously with this question. Collectively, they find that the weight of the textual data of the Old Testament clearly portrays an overarching understanding and theology of creation that permeates every biblical genre and book. These findings should inform the thinking of every honest Christian, whether layperson, theologian, or scientist. At its core, creation theology is all about Who God is, who we are, what our destiny is, and how God chooses to save a world that is in direct rebellion to its Creator." -- Back Cover.
