Paul J Rodocanachi R F C at Torreken Farm, Poet Roland Leightons death near Gommecourt Wood, the 10th, 11th and 13th Cheshires at St Yves and Le Gheer, the 7th Inniskillings Fusiliers at Wytschaete, the London Rifle Brigade at Ploegsteert and the 2nd Royal Welch at Loos. Also included are two stories covering recent events concerning the military burials of the remains of two Lancashire Fusiliers at Prowse Point Military Cemetery and a reflective wander around the Ypres Town Cemetery and Extension. All bring to the Great War enthusiast a more personalized view of the men, the events in which they took part and the areas where they were involved.

Concentrating on the Ploegsteert and Neuve Eglise sectors in Belgium, this book features stories on such well known figures as sculptor Charles Sargent Jagger, ARA; R. Poulton Palmer and 'Tanky' Turner, great friends and rugby football captains of England and Scotland respectively; as well the discovery and eventual burial of a Lancashire Fusilier who was killed in action in 1914; the research leading to the erection in 2002 of a 'Believed to be buried' headstone in the Strand cemetery of an Australian killed in action at Messines in 1917; the action in 1914 that initiated the birth of the infamous 'Birdcage' on the western edge of Ploegsteert Wood and other stories of interest to enthusiasts of the Great War. Another in the Cameos of the Western Front series on men, minor actions and battlefield sites, this book, like its predecessors is an ideal 'companion' for the battlefield visitor.

The task of object localization in medical images is a corner stone of automatic image processing and a prerequisite for other medical imaging tasks. In this thesis, we present a general framework for the automatic detection and localization of spatially correlated key points in medical images based on a conditional random field (CRF). The problem of selecting suitable potential functions (knowledge sources) and defining a reasonable graph topology w.r.t. the dataset is automated by our proposed data-driven CRF optimization. We show how our fairly simple setup can be applied to different medical datasets involving different image dimensionalities (i.e., 2D and 3D), image modalities (i.e., X-ray, CT, MRI) and target objects ranging from 2 to 102 distinct key points by automatically adapting the CRF to the dataset. While the used general "default" configuration represents an easy to transfer setup, it already outperforms other state-of-the-art methods on three out of four datasets. By slightly gearing the proposed approach to the fourth dataset, we further illustrate that the approach is capable of reaching state-of-the-art performance of highly sophisticated and data-specific deep-learning-based approaches. Additionally, we suggest and evaluate solutions for common problems of graph-based approaches such as the reduced search space and thus the potential exclusion of the correct solution, better handling of spatial outliers using latent variables and the incorporation of invariant higher order potential functions. Each extension is evaluated in detail and the whole method is additionally compared to a rivaling convolutional-neural-network-based approach on a hard problem (i.e., the localization of many locally similar repetitive target key points) in terms of exploiting the spatial correlation. Finally, we illustrate how follow-up tasks, segmentation in this case, may benefit from a correct localization by reaching state-of-the-art performance using off-the-shelve methods in combination with our proposed method.

The two volume set LNCS 5358 and LNCS 5359 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th International Symposium on Visual Computing, ISVC 2008, held in Las Vegas, NV, USA, in December 2008. The 102 revised full papers and 70 poster papers presented together with 56 full and 8 poster papers of 8 special tracks were carefully reviewed and selected from more than 340 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on computer graphics, visualization, shape/recognition, video analysis and event recognition, virtual reality, reconstruction, motion, face/gesture, and computer vision applications. The 8 additional special tracks address issues such as object recognition, real-time vision algorithm implementation and application, computational bioimaging and visualization, discrete and computational geometry, soft computing in image processing and computer vision, visualization and simulation on immersive display devices, analysis and visualization of biomedical visual data, as well as image analysis for remote sensing data.
