This report identifies factors which contribute to collisions that can be addressed by intelligent transport systems technologies in the People’s Republic of China. It examines opportunities for establishing a policy framework for the development and implementation of mobile-communication-based cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS) using connected vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-road infrastructure technologies. Some C-ITS applications identified and relevant to the People’s Republic of China are cooperative hazard warning systems and enhanced driver awareness and control. Government and industry—particularly the automobile industry—are the key stakeholders to realizing the deployment of C-ITS.

This report draws on the experience of Gui'an New District in the People's Republic of China to explain how intelligent transport systems can be planned, designed, and implemented. High-quality transport systems are essential for developing cities in the Asia and Pacific region to transform into safe, sustainable urban centers. Intelligent transport systems have a key role to play in boosting the operation and maintenance of urban transport modes by providing data collection, processing, and communications systems. Using Gu'ian New District as a case study, the report demonstrates how intelligent transport systems can save time, money, and lives if properly planned and implemented.

This book presents the latest, most interesting research efforts regarding Intelligent Transport System (ITS) technologies, from theory to practice. The book’s main theme is “Mobility for everyone by ITS”; accordingly, it gathers a range of contributions on human-centered factors in the use or development of ITS technologies, infrastructures, and applications. Each of these contributions proposes a novel method for ITS and discusses the method on the basis of case studies conducted in the Asia-Pacific region. The book are roughly divided into four general categories: 1) Safe and Secure Society, 2) ITS-Based Smart Mobility, 3) Next-Generation Mobility, and 4) Infrastructure Technologies for Practical ITS. In these categories, several key topics are touched on with each other such as driver assistance and behavior analysis, traffic accident and congestion management, vehicle flow management at large events, automated or self-driving vehicles, V2X technologies, next-generation public transportation systems, and intelligent transportation systems made possible by big data analysis. In addition, important current and future ITS-related problems are discussed, taking into account many case studies that have been conducted in this regard.
