Excerpt from Greeks and Goths: A Study on the Runes When this book was ready for the press I accidentally discovered that Rask, the greatest of Scandinavian scholars, believed that the view which I have advocated would ultimately prove to be the true solution of the problem of the Runes. I do not find, however, that he ever worked out the details of the theory or even formally propound'ed it. I have included in the volume a subsidiary investigation into the Origin of the Oghams, which are intimately connected with the Runes. Excerpt from The Clermont Runic Casket In this paper I propose to give an interpretation of this side, but, before doing so, I here discuss the carving on the faces that have already been subjected to treatment in literature, hoping to be able in several points to correct or supplement the interpretations hitherto accepted 2. Excerpt from The Runic and Other Monumental Remains of the Isle of Man With respect to the Runic Inscriptions, these have been copied separately. I found it impossible for them to be drawn without a certain value being given to some very faint and uncertain lines - these therefore I myself traced with the readings which I believe to be the most correct. The doubtful parts, however, I have noticed in the body of this work. The only really satis factory way of exhibiting them to those who are critical about the Runic readings would have been by means of actual photo graphs accompanying the work, and this I found, from the esti mates of different photographers to whom I submitted some specimens, would have too largely increased the cost of the work to general readers. The moulds from which the casts were made are many of them still in my possession, and a limited number of casts could be furnished to those who are willing to incur the expense of having Copies. Examining contemporary poetry by way of ethnicity and gender, Kenneth Lincoln tracks the Renaissance invention of the Wild Man and the recurrent Adamic myth of the lost Garden. He discusses the first anthology of American Indian verse, The Path on the Rainbow (1918), which opened Jorge Luis Borges' university surveys of American literature, to thirty-five contemporary Indian poets who speak to, with, and against American mainstream bards. From Whitman's free verse, through the Greenwich Village Renaissance (sandwiched between the world wars) and the post-apocalyptic Beat incantations, to transglobal questions of tribe and verse at the century's close, Lincoln shows where we mine the mother lode of New World voices, what distinguishes American verse, which tales our poets sing and what inflections we hear in the rhythms, pitches, and parsings of native lines. Lincoln presents the Lakota concept of "singing with the heart of a bear" as poetry which moves through an artist. He argues for a fusion of estranged cultures, tribal and émigré, margin and mainstream, in detailing the ethnopoetics of Native American translation and the growing modernist concern for a "native" sense of the "makings" of American verse. This fascinating work represents a major new effort in understanding American and Native American literature, spirituality, and culture.
