This book presents various techniques to carry out the gait modeling, the gait patterns synthesis, and the control of biped robots. Some general information on the human walking, a presentation of the current experimental biped robots, and the application of walking bipeds are given. The modeling is based on the decomposition on a walking step into different sub-phases depending on the way each foot stands into contact on the ground. The robot design is dealt with according to the mass repartition and the choice of the actuators. Different ways to generate walking patterns are considered, such as passive walking and gait synthesis performed using optimization technique. Control based on the robot modeling, neural network methods, or intuitive approaches are presented. The unilaterality of contact is dealt with using on-line adaptation of the desired motion.

The RO MAN SY Symposia have played an important role in the development of the theory and, to a lesser extent, the practice of manipulators, walking machines and robots. Based on past experience of previous symposia, which have been held over the last 10 years, the problem arose as to what to do in the future. In other words, in what direction should further symposia be organized? A panel discussion called 'Role of RO MAN SY Symposia' was held on 29 June 1984 during the final plenary session at CISM, Udine, Italy. The interest in using legged robots for a variety of terrestrial and space applications has grown steadily since the 1960s. At the present time, a large fraction of these robots relies on electric motors at the joints to achieve mobility. The load distributions inherent to walking, coupled with design constraints, can cause the motors to operate near their maximum torque capabilities or even reach saturation. This is especially true in applications like space exploration, where critical mass and power constraints limit the size of the actuators. Consequently, these robots can benefit greatly from motion optimization algorithms that guarantee successful walking with maximum margin to saturation. Previous gait optimization techniques have emphasized minimization of power requirements, but have not addressed the problem of saturation directly. This dissertation describes gait optimization techniques specifically designed to enable operation as far as possible from saturation during walking. The benefits include increasing the payload mass, preserving actuation capabilities to react to unforeseen events, preventing damage to hardware due to excessive loading, and reducing the size of the motors. The techniques developed in this work follow the approach of optimizing a reference gait one move at a time. As a result, they are applicable to a large variety of purpose-specific gaits, as well as to the more general problem of single pose optimization for multi-limbed walking and climbing robots. The first part of this work explores a zero-interaction technique that was formulated to increase the margin to saturation through optimal displacements of the robot's body in 3D space. Zero-interaction occurs when the robot applies forces only to sustain its weight, without squeezing the ground. The optimization presented here produces a swaying motion of the body while preserving the original footfall locations. Optimal displacements are found by solving a nonlinear optimization problem using sequential quadratic programming (SQP). Improvements of over 20% in the margin to saturation throughout the gait were achieved with this approach in simulation and experiments. The zero-interaction technique is the safest in the absence of precise knowledge of the contact mechanical properties and friction coefficients. The second part of the dissertation presents a technique that uses the null space of contact forces to achieve greater saturation margins. Interaction forces can significantly contribute to saturation prevention by redirecting the net contact force relative to critical joints. A method to obtain the optimal distribution of forces for a given pose via linear programming (LP) is presented. This can be applied directly to the reference gait, or combined with swaying motion. Improvements of up to 60% were observed in simulation by combining the null space with sway. The zero-interaction technique was implemented and validated on the All Terrain Hex-Limbed Extra-Terrestrial Explorer (ATHLETE), a hexapod robot developed by NASA for the transport of heavy cargo on the surface of the moon. Experiments with ATHLETE were conducted at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, confirming the benefits predicted in simulation. The results of these experiments are also presented and discussed in this dissertation.

How quickly the technological 'flavour of the month' changes. At the beginning of the 1980's many saw 'robotics' as being something of a pana cea for those problems in the manufacturing industries which had been exacerbated by the world recession. Those working at the time in the field of robotics stressed that robots themselves were only part of the solution. Yet in many quarters the 'hype' for the new technology apparently knew few bounds, resulting, inexorably, in many industries painfully discover ing for themselves a new realism, closely followed by disillusionment. In its wider sense the term 'robotics' covers an extremely broad spec trum of technologies ranging from extremely flexible, highly sensory and integrated systems capable of handling a very diverse product range, through to comparatively inflexible, high volume systems which can merely handle slightly different variations of the same basic product. As a result of the one 'buzzword' referring to such a variety of actual system types, the disillusionment which started to become apparent during the early 1980's acted as something of a double edged sword. A given com pany might consider a particular robotics-based technological solution to its production problems, find that it was unsuitable, and so renounce all robotics approaches as inappropriate. Yet just because one position on that spectrum of technological solutions was unsuitable for the company should not have led them to assume that there was no other robotics solu tion that was appropriate.

This volume contains the selected papers of the first I.D.M.M.E. conference on 'Integrated Design and Manufacturing in Mechanical Engineering', held in Nantes from 15-17 April 1996. The articles of this book were reported and discussed at the fifth international symposium on Advances in Robot Kinematics. As is known, the first symposium of this series was organised in 1988 in Ljubljana. The following meetings took place every other year in Austria, Italy, and Slovenia (Linz, Ferrara, Ljubljana, Portoroz Bernardin). It must be emphasised that the symposia run under the patronage of the International Federation for the Theory of Machinesand Mechanisms, IFToMM. In this period, Advances in Robot Kinematics has been able to attract the most outstanding authors in the area and also to create an optimum combination of a scientific pragmatism and a friendly atmosphere. Hence, it has managed to survive in a strong competition of many international conferences and meetings. In the most ancient way, robot kinematics is regarded as an application of the kinematics of rigid hodies. However, there are topics and problems that are typical for robot kinematics that cannot easily be found in any other scientific field. It is our belief that the initiative of Advances in Robot Kinematics has contributed to develop a remarkable scientific community. The present book is of interest to researchers, doctoral students and teachers, engineers and mathematicians specialising in kinematics of robots and mechanisms, mathematical modelling, simulation, design, and control of robots.
