Extrait de la couverture : "Of the numerous available studies on forest management in Asia, only a few mention the role of women or pay attention to gender relations. Even projects are largely designed in terms of households or communities where men are the decision-makers and the owners or managers of forests. This important volume views gender relations as a crucial factor in the management of land and forests, and maintains that the continuing invisibility of women in these areas only compounds poverty, shortages, and the increased workloads of forest-based women. Based on fieldwork conducted in several forest societies in China, Thailand, India and Malaysia, the contributors explore the changes in gender relations within indigenous communities, from matrilineal and/or gender egalitarian systems to ones where male domination is the norm."

The rise of Christianity around the world has been the impetus for much religious and social change. The interconnectivity of religious centers has resulted in theological dialogue and innovation. The subversion of long-held categories of culture, gender, race, spirituality, theology, and politics has naturally occurred along with the transgressing of borders and boundaries. Yet at the same time, there has been occasion for healing through intercultural experiences of forgiveness, peacemaking, and reconciliation. Stimulated by the work and mentorship of Joel Carpenter, who has done much to expand the study of world Christianity less through focusing on his own research and writing, and more through amplifying the voices of others, the international contributors to this volume from all six continents promote a deeper understanding of World Christianity through the exploration of such related themes. Whether discussing primal spirituality in northeast India, white supremacy in South Africa, evangelical women and civic engagement in Kenya, or Calvinism in Mexico, the contributors draw upon ethnographic case studies to more deeply understand interconnectivity, subversion, and healing in World Christianity. Their essays provoke a reorientation of Christian thought within the study of World Christianity, enriching the current discourse and promoting vistas for further interdisciplinary studies.

There are several traditional values for peace in the Khasi Contemporary society similar to what Bareh has discussed in his book The History and Culture of the Khasi People. These traditional values include knowing God knowing man, earning righteousness, knowing maternal and paternal kinship. In addition to that, politeness count, living a simple life, justice, truth, respect, discipline, hard work, and sanctity of marriage, forgiveness, cooperation, community spirit, hospitality, honesty and the spirit of compromise. These traditional values for peace were found to be practiced among Khasi community in the realm of social, economic, political, religious, and ecological aspect. The Khasi traditional values are still relevant in the so-called modern Society. Therefore, there is a need to imbibe those values in order to contribute to peace in the society. Imbibing the traditional values in the present context is very much needed because as we see in today’s world there are a lot of discriminations, corruption, injustice and lack of respect to one another which is domineering the world. This is a cry of every human being and cosmos that, peace is the need of the hour. Individuals, scholars, various groups, institution and so on, have initiated the thought that the concept of peace is not extinct and should not be push to the periphery but it should be used to overcome this 21st century culture and lifestyle.

Asia is by far the largest continent in the world. The global expansion of the church, which emanated from the Middle East (as explored in the first book in the series) moved along various routes to take root in Asia proper. Christianity in Asia is extraordinarily diverse, with very ancient forms of the faith dating to the time of the apostles. The western church will be enlightened by the dynamic, multi-pronged Asian story of Christianity. Asian Christianity is also distinct due to the numerous non-traditional, house, or cell movements found throughout the region. The diversity of Christianity in Asia makes Christians in this region critical for the future of global Christianity.
