This book is a contribution to our understanding of the worrying situation of small-scale fisheries (SSF) which face marginalisation in most coastal countries. The authors explain why SSF are so pressured; how there has been a powerful backlash against this marginalisation during the last 30 years; what are the main ideational currents supporting this backlash; and what is the enduring value of SSF that justifies that support. The authors discuss the major contemporary interpretations of SSF; the challenges facing SSF globally and in England; and SSF’s coping strategies in response to those challenges through the framework of resilience theory. In an innovative analysis, the authors show how there are three kinds of resilience: passive resilience (where fishers are resigned to their adverse fate), adaptive resilience (where fishers make the best use of the opportunities that are available to them), and transformative resilience (where fishers attempt to change the system that faces them). The authors draw on an extensive range of interview data to provide rich insights into the world of SSF, and they discuss a variety of proposals for improving their conditions. Small-scale fisheries are critical for securing livelihoods for millions of people around the world, yet are increasingly vulnerable to external drivers of change such as globalization and climate change. There is an imminent need to redirect management goals towards facilitating resilient small-scale fisheries capable of adapting in a constantly changing world. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate how to faciliate resilient small-scale fisheries from both a social and ecological perspective at various scales. This research was carried out using a comparative case study approach across fishing communities and cooperatives along Bahia Magdalena and Golfo de Ulloa, Baja California Sur, Mexico, an important region for small-scale fisheries, characterized by extreme uncertainty and variability. I found that increased access to the environment through the equitable distribution of resources and rights can facilitate resilient small-scale fisheries from a social perspective. The ecological impacts of diversification across fisheries and livelihoods are likely context specific, however negative impacts can be minimized when policies recognize the multiple dimensions of small-scale fisheries, and when fishers are integrated into policy processes. Furthermore, a greater suite of economic opportunities within and outside the small-scale fisheries sector can provide alternative pathways out of poverty-overfishing cycles. Overall, this research suggests that with greater attention to access, equity, and participatory governance, small-scale fisheries in Mexico and beyond will be better equipped to sustain livelihoods and the environment in a changing world.

The study, "Resilience and seizing opportunities – Small-scale fisheries and aquaculture businesses that thrived during the COVID-19 pandemic in South and Southeast Asia", attempts to evaluate and compare the pre- and post-pandemic situation and scenario of the concerned groups of the fisheries and aquaculture industry in eight countries. It reveals how these groups survived by adopting innovations in various country contexts and social settings and how the production, supply and market continued operation. The study shows how responsive the government policies and interventions were in supporting the concerned groups. It also shows the preventive measures taken to contain the mass spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and the manner in which the community livelihoods were impacted by these measures. The case studies included provide evidence of the resilience of the small-scale fishers, aquaculture operators and fisheries-based business operators and illustrate how opportunities may be seized by them and others affected by similar pandemics and other natural disasters and events. The study sheds light on areas where more focus should be given so that all parties may be better prepared for future crises, have equitable and inclusive support policies, have transparency in policy responses as well as take into account gender equality. This book offers a comprehensive account of the status and dynamics of people participating in the small-scale fisheries (SSF) of Europe. It covers the situation of SSF in 25 coastal countries, thereby providing a portrait of almost every coastal country on the continent and analyzing the recent evolution of the sector. Small-scale fisheries are argued to be extremely important in Europe, as they provide employment and welfare, while increasing food sovereignty and maintaining communities in coastal areas. The recent worldwide focus on SSF derives from their environmental sustainability, which distinguishes many of their activities from those of large-scale fisheries. This book analyses the diversity of SSF and shows how fishing communities have sometimes developed successful governing models, demonstrating social and economic resilience.
