Pressure-temperature curves for the alpha-gamma transformation in iron and iron alloys of Al, Cr, Mn, Co, and Ni were developed by duplex differ ential thermal conductivity analysis. Similarly, eutectoid curves for Fe-C and Fe-Mn-C (98.3 1.0-0.33) were developed. Special kinetic analy sis of the data was necessary to assure closeness to equilibrium conditions for the eutectoid reactions, and good agreement with atmospheric data is recorded. Hystereses in the alpha-gamma transformation generally increased with pressure. Changes in slope in certain forward and reverse transformation curves can probably be attributed to kinetics of the transformations. (Author).

This is the first book to classify and systematize the available data on the behavior of binary alloys under high pressure. Despite the fact that there is a strong correlation between temperature-composition (T-C) phase diagrams at normal pressure and three- dimensional temperature-composition-pressure (T-C-P) diagrams, many material scientists seldom refer to the (T-C-P) diagrams, just as many high pressure researchers often ignore the data obtained at normal pressure. This book aims to bridge the gap between data obtained at high pressure and that obtained at normal pressure. On October 3, 1963, a symposium was sponsored by the Bureau of Naval Weapons, Metalworking Processes and Equipment Program, on the application of high pressure in metal-deformation processing. Past research has shown that superimposed hydrostatic pressure can significantly increase the ductility at fracture of various materials. These observations have stimulated considerable interest in applying this hydrostatic-pressure effect to metal deformation processing, where it was anticipated that improved ductility and fabricability of brittle materials could be realized. Hydrostatic extrusion and hydrodynamic compressive forging were two such fabrication techniques discussed at the symposium, and preliminary results were found to be encouraging. Another fabrication process that will be investigated in the near future is sheet drawing, where the effect of superimposed pressure improves the ductility to fracture, it was noted that pressure cycling did not improve either the strength or ductility of steels containing various amounts of carbon. In addition to the mechanical-property effects, hydrostatic pressure has been found to affect measurably, numerous metallurgical properties of metals and alloys. (Author).

The growth rate and interlamellar spacing of pearlite were determined as a function of trans formation temperature at one atmosphere and 30 kilobars pressure in eutectoid iron-carbon alloys containing approximately one percent manganese. The atmospheric-pressure growth rates, measured at four temperatures in the range 560 to 680 C, were in fair agreement with data obtained on a similar alloy by other investigators. Indications were found of a change in slope of the reciprocal spacing vs temperature curve at one atmosphere corresponding to the onset of partitioning of manganese between ferrite and cementite at 640 C. High-pressure runs were made at seven tempera tures in the range 400 to 620 C. In comparison with the properties of the transformation at one atmosphere, the specimens transformed at 30 kb exhibited a decrease in pearlite growth rates by factors of up to a thousand. A substantial in crease in the interlamellar spacing of the pearlite. The results for the effect of pres sure on pearlite growth rate and spacing con firm those obtained at a single temperature in a preliminary survey made earlier in this laboratory.
