Excerpt from A Preliminary Report on the St. Francis Valley Drainage Project in Northeastern Arkansas Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith a preliminary report, accompanied by three maps, upon the drainage Of a part Of the lands in the St. Francis Basin, situated in northeastern Arkansas, prepared by Drainage Investigations Of this Office. For several years past there has been a movement on the part of the owners toward the reclamation Of these fertile lands for agriculture, which naturally follows the removal of the merchantable timber with which the lands were originally covered. The low level Of the land with respect to the Mississippi River and the vast area Of the valley, which lies in both Missouri and Arkansas, present conditions which require a well-considered and comprehensive plan Of reclamation upon which all property interests concerned will unite if the work required is to be accomplished. A preliminary plan which is based upon careful surveys made by the engineers connected with Drainage Investigations Of this Office is here presented. Since the area of land directly concerned with the plan is more than one million acres, it is desirable that the report be made available for general distribution. I therefore recommend that it be printed as a circular. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
