Excerpt from Report of the International Ice Patrol Service in the North Atlantic Ocean, Vol. 1 This is the 83nd annual report of the International Ice Patrol (IIP). It contains information on Ice Patrol operations, environmental conditions, and ice conditions for the 1997 IIP season. The U. S. Coast Guard conducts the Ice Patrol in the North Atlantic under the provisions of U. S. Code, Title 46, Sections 738, 738 a through 738d, and the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), 1974. The IIP is supported by 17 member nations (Appendix A). It was initiated shortly after the sinking of the RMS Titanic on April 15, 1912 and has been conducted yearly since that time. Commander, International Ice Patrol (CIIP) is under the operational control of Commander, Coast Guard Atlantic Area. CIIP directs the Ice Patrol from its Operations Center in Groton, Connecticut. IIP receives iceberg location reports from ships and planes transiting its patrol area and conducts aerial Ice Reconnaissance Detachments (ICERECDETs) to survey the southeastern, southern, and southwestern regions of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland for icebergs. IIP analyzes ice and environmental data and employs an iceberg drift and deterioration model to produce twice daily iceberg warnings, which are broadcast to mariners as ice bulletins and facsimile charts. IIP also responds to requests for iceberg information. IIP's ICERECDETs were based in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada during the 1997 season. The cover graphic shows the hand-drawn ice chart based on observations made by the U. S. Revenue Cutter Seneca during the ice seasons 1913 and 1914. Vice Admiral Kent H. Williams was Commander, Atlantic Area until May, 1997, when he was relieved by Vice Admiral Roger T. Rufe, Jr. CDR Ross L. Tuxhorn was Commander, International Ice Patrol until July, 1997, when he was relieved by Commander Stephen L. Sielbeck. Excerpt from Report of the International Ice Patrol Service in the North Atlantic Ocean: 1983 Season, Bulletin No; 69, Cg-188-38 The Coast Guard acquired a new Side Looking Airborne Radar (slar) in October 1982, which was used extensively during the 1983 season. It is a model an/aps-135 manufactured by Motorola, Inc., and replaces their older an/aps-94d which was used on Coast Guard C-130 aircraft. The an/aps-135 is a vast improvement over the an/aps-94d. It proved to be an excellent tool for the detection of sea ice and icebergs, especially in low visibility conditions. In past years, the success of Ice Patrol reconnaissance flights were dependent upon good visibility in the search area. The new slar allowed the plane crew to search a certain area, regardless of the visibili ty conditions. The results from the slar were not as reliable as a good visual search due to the inability to positively identify and describe icebergs detected. But the weather conditions in Newfoundland and the Grand Banks are usually poor, forcing an aircraft without slar to remain on the ground twice as often, awaiting good visibility. This is no longer necessary with the an/aps-135 slar. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from International Ice Observation and Patrol Service in the North Atlantic Ocean: Season of 1951 The activities of the International Ice Patrol for the 1951 season are presented herein. This bulletin adheres to the same general pattern established in previous years except that the Table of Ice Reports returns to the former practice of listing all ice reports chronologically without regard to whether the particular report was north or south of any particular latitude. Similarly, the monthly digest of ice conditions incorporates all significant ice information in all latitudes. Obstructions other than ice, such as drifting buoys, derelicts, etc., have not been included in the Table of Ice Reports since their significance therein is doubtful. The oceanographic section was prepared by Oceanographer Floyd M. Soule, Lt. P. S. Branson and Lt. (jg) R. P. Dinsmore. Lt. (jg) Sam Pisicchio, U. S. C. G., prepared the sections pertaining to the conduct of the International Ice Patrol. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
