DOWNLOAD EBOOK →Excerpt from Memories of My Youth, 1844-1865 My record of the events of the earlier years is based in part upon some home letters of my own which had for tunately escaped destruction, and in part upon my memory of conversations with my father. It is quite possible that for some portions of the narrative which were not covered by such letters or conversations, my memory may be at fault in regard to one detail or another, but I hope that the oversights will not be found important. DOWNLOAD EBOOK →Excerpt from Recollections: 1837 1910 So many memoirs, reminiscences and recollections, by authors of distinction, have been published during recent years that a person so little known as I am would nat urally hesitate to appear in the same field. But such pro ductions usually describe events, incidents or person ages notable in court, camp or forum, and no one, so far as I know, has attempted to present the recollections and experiences of an ordinary life through the changes and advances of this progressive era. I had not thought of making such attempt until strongly urged to do so by my family, and by friends to whom I had related many occurrences - in answer to inquiries or as brought to mind by some new development - which they regarded as suffi ciently interesting or instructive as to be worthy of pub lication. Such urging, and also my desire to correct cer tain misstatements in harvester history and some other popular misunderstandings, finally induced me to under take the work. DOWNLOAD EBOOK →Excerpt from Recollections of Life in Ohio: From 1813 to 1840 It was at my suggestion that my father began, ten or twelve years ago, to set down the facts of his early life. At first the record was meant for his family only, but when I came to read it over I found it so full of experiences and observations of general interest, that I urged him to continue it, with a view to its final publication, and yet keep it as simple and informal as he had originally intended. This will account for its appearance and character in the present shape. He was never able to finish it, and the work of revision fell to me after his death. In doing this work I felt that the value of his reminiscences to the public was, of course, in the perspective they afforded of times and conditions long past away, and I have tried to free them from all personalities not essential to this. Necessarily, however, they remain very personal, as far as the writer and his immediate family are concerned. These, indeed, constitute the background of a picture, which could not have had due relief without them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. DOWNLOAD EBOOK →Excerpt from Recollections of Past Life The few copies so printed have long been exhausted; and I have been urged by friends whose judgment I rightly respect, to publish the volume at once, with larger additions than those hitherto made. This, I am aware, is a very old and often abused plea for publication. But in the present instance other motives concurred to justify what indeed may almost be deemed a posthumous act, seeing that I go to the press when already advanced in my eighty-fourth year.
