Into the short compass of this book Professor Graetz has succeeded in compressing an eminently readable survey of the directions in which the atomic theory, as accepted in the nineteenth century, has been extended by the remarkable and almost revolutionary physical investigations and discoveries of the two decades preceding the book’s original publication in 1923.

Excerpt from The Atomic Theory Simple bodies combine in definite proportions. This is one of the most firmly established truths of natliral philosophy. It includes the two following facts: Firstly, the relative weight of combining bodies is always fixed in every combination; secondly, the numbers which express these relations are interproportional for all kinds of combinations. We must clearly understand the meaning of these propositions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A New View of the Origin of Dalton's Atomic Theory IT may seem remarkable that, after the lapse of nearly a century since John Dalton first applied the atomic theory of matter to chemical phenomena, it should be possible to find anything new respecting the genesis of his ideas. And this is the more remarkable when we remember that the life and scientific labours of the great Manchester chemist have formed the subject of independent memoirs at the hands of two such able contemporaries as Charles Henry and Angus Smith. The explana tion is to be found in the unlooked-for discovery, in the rooms of the Literary and Philosophical Society of Manchester, Where the whole of Dalton's experimental work was carried out, of his. Excerpt from Foundations of the Atomic Theory: Comprising Papers and Extracts N a former paper which I submitted to this Society, On the constitution of mixed gases, I adopted such proportions of the simple elastic fluids to constitute the atmosphere as were then current, not intending to warrant the accuracy of them all, as stated in the said paper; my principal object in that essay was, to point out the manner in which mixed elastic fluids exist together, and to insist upon what I think a very important and fundamental position in the doctrine of such fluids namely, that the elastic or repulsive power of each particle is confined to those of its own kind; and con sequently the force of such fluid, retained in a given vessel, or gravifiting, is the same in a separate as in a mixed state, depending upon its proper density and temperature. This principle accords with all experience, and I have no doubt will soon be perceived and acknow ledged by chemists and philosophers in general; and its application will elucidate a variety of facts, which are otherwise involved in obscurity. From the Memoirs of the Literary and Philosophical Society of Manchester, Second Series, Volume I., 1805, pp. 244-258. In this paper there is announced the first example of the law of multiple proportions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
