Excerpt from Railway Returns: Returns of the Capital, Traffic, Receipts, and Working Expenditure of the Railway Companies of the United Kingdom for the Year 1907 (Pursuant to the Act 34 and 35 Vict. Cap. 78) The summary shows that in 1907, as compared with 1906, there was an increase of more than four and a quarter millions in gross receipts, but that nearly ninety per cent. Of this increase went to meet increased working expenditure, the increase in net receipts being less than half a million pounds. The total amount of paid-up capital increased by about seven and three quarter millions, and the proportion of net earnings to total paid-up capital rose slightly from in 1906 to in 1907.
