Excerpt from Prospecting for Gold and Silver While we have endeavored to give the prospector all assist ance in our power, as to the best means of educating himself, describing his outfit, etc., we have devoted Special attention to the description of such geological and other phenomena as he is likely to meet with in'connection with his work, so that he may have an intelligent idea of them when he encounters them. We have selected just as much material as we think would be most interesting and useful to him, saving him the time and trouble of wading through heavy tomes and laboriously picking out, from a vast amount of, for his purpose, superfluous matter, that which he will most require. How this want may be met I have endeavoured to show in the following pages. I do not claim, nor could I claim, any originality for the pan-amalgamation process, but by introducing a cheap and effective little balance, the procedure. Excerpt from The Mining and Metallurgy of Gold and Silver His object has rather been to render this volume practically useful as a record of well-authenticated facts, and of the results of actual experience, than to advance new theories, or to accumulate additional evidence in support of old ones. He has, therefore, contented himself with merely stating the results both of his own observations, and those of others; or at most with suggesting the nature of the forces producing the effects described. He believes that our knowledge of chemical geology is not, as yet, sufficiently advanced to warrant an attempt to form a general theory of the formation of mineral veins. Recent observations and experience appear, however, to lead to three important conclusions. First, that the most productive gold bearing rocks are by no means exclusively confined to the Silurian period; secondly, that aqueous agencies have been, and still are, actively at work in the formation of mineral deposits; and, thirdly.
