Excerpt from Properties of Steam and Ammonia The older tables of the properties of steam were neither consistent nor accurate. The tabular values were calculated from empirical formu las based chie y on Regnault's data, and the necessity of consistency was not recognized. Two sets of tables have been based on the general theory developed by Callendar. These are absolutely consistent, but in the light of the knowledge acquired from the Munich experiments, they can no longer be regarded as accurate. In certain tables that have appeared recently have been embodied the results of the Munich experi ments and also the researches of Dr. Davis on the total heat of steam. These tables are undoubtedly far more accurate than the earlier tables, but, having a more or less empirical basis, they are not rigorously con sistent. The tables of the properties of saturated and superheated steam here presented are based on a new formulation the essential features of which are discussed in the first section of the book. A more complete exposi tion will be found in Bulletin No. 75, Engineering Experiment Station, University of Illinois. The new theory correlates perfectly the experi ments on the volume and specific heat of superheated steam; it gives values of the heat content of saturated steam that agree with those deduced by Davis from the throttling experiments; and, in general, it meets satisfactorily all the tests furnished by the available experimental evidence. The tables derived from the formulation are necessarily con sistent, and they are at the same time extremely accurate. Excerpt from The Properties of Saturated and Superheated Ammonia Vapor The first attempt to establish the fundamental equations for the vapor (ff ammonia and to compute tables of its properties was made by Ledoux.6 These equations and resulting tables, resting as they do upon unsound hypotheses and meager experimental data, are, in the light of later investigations, quite inaccurate. The next theoretical investigation of the subject was undertaken by Zeuner,7 who computed new constants for ammonia, in the equation of state of the form already applied by him to steam, and used by Ledoux for ammonia. He also constructed empirical formulas for the inner and outer latent heat, and the specific heat'of the liquid, and by use of these formulas computed tables which. Appeared in the earlier editions of his thermodynamics.8 In the later editions9 the values thus calculated have still been used for temperatures below 32 F., but results of later experimental deter minations have been used above that temperature. These tables for ammonia vapor are given in both English and French units. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Tables of the Properties of Steam and Other Vapors, and Temperature-Entropy Table The Tables of the Properties of Steam were published in 1888, to accompany the author's Thermodynamics of the Steam Engine in 1907 they were revised, taking advantage of added information then available, and a temperature-entropy Table was added to facilitate calculations for steam turbines. The properties of steam have recently been redetermined by new and refined methods, that are capable of great certainty and precision, so that computations based upon them Show a satisfactory concordance. These tables have been recomputed with this information, and may, therefore, be used with confidence and may be expected to have permanence. The temperature-entropy Table gives solutions of all adiabatic prob lems (and many others) both for saturated and for superheated steam with ease and precision, and permits us to make certain determinations not otherwise possible. For engineering purposes answers to such prob lems may in general be read directly from the table; greater refinement can be had by interpolation when necessary. Excerpt from Tables of the Properties of Saturated Steam and Other Vapors In presenting the tables for general use, it appears proper to state in full the data and the methods of calculation employed, so that each one may see the degree of accuracy and correctness of the tables, and the reliance to be placed on them. Tables of the properties of other vapors have been added, which will be discussed hereafter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Thermal Properties of Steam In order to make the presentation more useful, and perhaps more intelligible, it has been considered advisable to include (1) a section on thermodynamic relations, and (2) a section devoted to a brief historical review of some of the more important analytical investigations. Excerpt from Tables and Diagrams of the Thermal Properties of Saturated and Superheated Steam Note To the 1916 reprint. The experimental information which has become avail able since these tables were computed does not justify any appreciable change in them except in one respect. The work of Holborn and Baumann on the pressure-temperature relations of saturated steam at high pressures should apparently be accepted in preference to all previous work. The pressures involved are from 400 lb. Per sq. In. To the critical pressure and are consequently outside the range of usual engineering experience. The last few entries in Tables 3, and 6 have been changed to bring them into agreement with this new information. A new Mollier chart has been prepared which will be found to be more convenient.
