The Balloon Company which may now be taken to include aeroplanes and airships will be employed for general strategical and tactical reconnaissance at all periods of a campaign and for observation of artillery fire. It will probably also be utilized for transport of maps and special reports, for transport of general and staff officers for special meetings and occasionally to give higher commanders a bird's-eye view of the battlefield. It is under the direct control of the Commander-in-Chief (F. S. Regs., I., 5 - 5). Each Balloon Company can put only one captive balloon or set of kites in the air at one time. The constitution as regards aeroplanes and airships is not yet laid down. 8. The Bridging Train is intended to supplement the small amount of rapid bridging equipment allotted to the Field Companies.
