Excerpt from Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 1915, Vol. 1 The method is applicable to invariants of several forms in any number of variables and to semi-invariants, as shown in the paper cited, which gives also a novel method of deriving modular invariants from semi invariants. Excerpt from Memoirs of the National Academy of Sciences, 1896, Vol. 8 The work has extended over a period of ten months, with considerable interruption during much of the time. Virgin soil was examined to a depth of 12 feet, samples having been obtained from the walls of an excavation at intervals of a foot. Samples of made soil were obtained in the same way to a depth of 9 feet. Other samples of both made and virgin soil were obtained by Frankel's earth borer to a depth of 55 feet. Excerpt from Bulletin of the National Research Council, Vol. 4: September, 1922, to December, 1922, Inclusive When we adopt the conventional language of Euclidean geometry a gravitational field of Einstein's type is, in our opinion, comparable with a material medium with electric and magnetic polarizations. There is, however, the important distinction that in a gravitational field the coefficients a satisfy certain gravitational equations which are characteristic of Einstein's theory and to obtain a material medium whose properties are associated with a quadratic difi'erential form having coefficients of the right type we may have to introduce polariza tions which travel with velocity c. Fields arising from polarization of this type will be studied in Section 10. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
