Since 2014, and the start of the New-type Urbanization Plan (NUP), we see a turning point in the sustainability agenda of China. One of the main indicators is greening cities and the built environments, which will be covered holistically in this edited book. From the perspective of green infrastructure, in particular, the book approaches key areas of ‘forest city development’, ‘sponge city program’, ‘green roofing’, ‘nature-based solutions’, ‘urban farming’, ‘eco-city development’, etc. This is the first time that such important areas of research come together under the perspective of green Infrastructure. The results would be beneficial to policymakers, practitioners, and researchers in China and across the globe. The comprehensive set of findings from this book will benefit other countries, as we aim to highlight some of the best practices of the current age. The main aim of the book is to put together an excellent group of scholars and practitioners from the field, focusing on the topic of ‘Green Infrastructure in Chinese Cities’. In doing so, we aim to cover some of the key ‘best practices’ for sustainable urbanism. Divided into four parts, the book covers four key areas of (1) Policy Interventions, (2) Planning Innovation, (3) Design Solutions, and (4) Technical Integration. In doing so, we cover an array of best practices related to green infrastructures of various types and their impacts on cities and communities in China. We expect the book to be a valuable resource for researchers in the areas of sustainability, urbanism, urban planning, urban geography, urban design, geographical sciences, environmental sciences, landscape architecture, and urban ecology. The book covers essential factors such as policy, regulations, and programs (in Part 1), planning paradigms and their impacts on urban development (in Part 2), integrated design solutions that suggest sustainable urbanization progression (in Part 3), and technical knowledge that would be utilized for the future development of green infrastructure practices in China and beyond. Lastly, this edited book aims to provide a collaborative opportunity for experts and researchers of the field, who could contribute to the future pathways of sustainable urbanization of China. Lessons extracted from these contributions could be utilized for other contexts, which will benefit a wider group of stakeholders.

In November 2018, National Academy of Sciences (NAS) President Marcia McNutt visited China for the first time in her official role. As part of this visit, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Science and Technology for Sustainability (STS) program and the Chinese Academy of Sciences organized a one-day workshop relating to urban sustainability in Beijing. The goal of the visit was to begin to explore some areas where the U.S. National Academies and the Chinese Academy might develop collaboration. At the same time, the trip provided an opportunity to develop links to other parts of the science and technology community in China. To further elucidate some of these issues and build upon current partnerships, an expert committee under the STS program, in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, organized a one-day public workshop on urban sustainability in China and the United States, held on December 16, 2019. The workshop focused on the intersection of urban climate change mitigation and adaptation, urban health, and sustainable transportation, including green infrastructure and urban flooding in both countries. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

In the face of increasingly serious resource and environmental challenges, the world has already accepted low-carbon development as the main way forward for future city construction. Chinese cities have encountered many problems during their development, including land constraints, energy shortages, traffic congestion and air pollution. For this reason, the national meeting of the Central Work Conference on Urbanization made the strategic decision to take a new approach to urbanization and indicated that in future the key features of urbanization in China will be low-carbon development and harmony between the environment and resources. This book discusses the "low-carbon city" as the new pattern of Chinese urbanization. This represents a major change and takes "intensive land use,” “intelligent,” “green” and “low carbon" as its key words. Low carbon will become an important future development direction for Chinese urbanization development. In the twenty-first Century in response to the global climate change, countries have started a wave of low-carbon city construction. But in China, there are still many disputes and misunderstandings surrounding the issue. Due to a lack of research, low-carbon city construction in China is still in the early stages, and while there have been successes, there have also been failures. There are complex and diverse challenges in applying low-carbon development methods in the context of today’s Chinese cities. The construction of low-carbon cities requires efficient government, the technological innovation of enterprises, and professional scholars, but also efforts on the part of the public to change their daily activities. Based on the above considerations, the collection brings together experts from urban planning and design, clean-energy systems, low-carbon transportation, new types of city infrastructure and smart cities etc., in the hope of forming some solutions for Chinese low-carbon city development.

One of the issues of urban development and urban lifestyle, which can be studied from the sea to space, has posed important challenges for humanities, environmental management of cities and urban areas, and the economy. This field is one of the pillars of sustainable development from urban studies towards sustainability welfare. Research and development (R & D) in this part plays a crucial role where urban problems are always alive and increasing every year because of changing customer preferences and needs. City authorities must make appropriate policy choices to protect the provision of equitable housing, health, and transportation services in the future. The megatrends 2030 triggered by the Industrial Revolution 4.0 estimates urbanization will increase sharply, massive move from rural to urban areas, and the land is getting narrower, especially in Asia. New directions and developments in this field and discussion of future priorities must be well anticipated, meticulous, dignified, and innovative. This book highlights the latest views and solutions to technological innovations adapted to achieve prosperity in urban sustainability. For instance, adapting new buildings for urban needs with low-cost and modern design materials, the housing environment and the layout of city space, weather changes to disaster, and smart transportation systems are also taken into account. It also involves electricity, environmental management, and ways to use agricultural land to increase income. The ease of technology produced will change the business model. This contributed volume presents solicit selected papers of the 2020 International Conference on Urban Sustainability, Environment, and Engineering (CUSME 2020) with the theme "Urban Life and Technology". The book covers the point of view in urban architectures with green technology, sustainable environmental, management, agrotechnology, and smart transportation systems. The impact of urban development such as psychological and cultural influences, communication and social complexity, information systems and technology is also discussed with various solutions offered. The outcomes of the conference will certainly support government policy, stakeholders, policymakers, scientists, and engineers by bringing together their latest findings towards achieving a sustainable economy, improved quality of life, and protecting the environment. The findings of this study will create opportunities for further collaboration and are expected to improve the welfare of humanity. The conference committee and all our contributors wish to pleasantly thank for their efforts and cooperation in finalizing this volume.
