Excerpt from Problems in Physics for Technical Schools, Colleges, and Universities Prof. N. H. Williams of the Department of Physics, University of Michigan. It should be stated, however, that in the prepara tion of the exercises many sources of information have been drawn upon, acknowledgment in each individual case not always being considered necessary, or convenient. The author cannot hope that these problems are entirely free from errors. He will consider it a favor, therefore, if teachers who use the text will inform him of corrections or criticisms. The author wishes to thank Professors N. H. Williams and D. L. Rich, both of the Department of Physics, University of Michigan, for helpful criticisms and valuable suggestions. Excerpt from Problems in Physics for Technical Schools, Colleges, and Universities This text has grown out of some seven years' experience in the teaching of large classes of engineering students in general physics in the University of Michigan. Throughout the course of this work one hour a week was devoted wholly to the solution of practical problems bearing upon the fundamental principles treated in the lecture room and laboratory. This phase of the work proved so satisfactory that it was deemed desirable to incorporate the typewritten exercises into the form of the present volume. This was done both for the convenience of our own students and instructors, and also with the hope that the exercises may be of service to other teachers of physics. These exercises are intended to supplement the usual one year's course in general physics, with a supply of material of such range and variety as will be likely to stimulate the student's interest and clarify his understanding. The chief characteristics of this text may be summarized briefly as follows: 1. Statement of Fundamental Principles. - Accompanying each set of problems there is a brief statement of the fundamental principles involved, and also a large number of illustrative examples which enable the student to proceed with his work with a minimum of time and attention on the part of the instructor. 2. Character of the Problems. - The problems are practical, carefully graded, and are thoroughly workable. 3. Range of Problems. - The one thousand and twenty-five problems herein contained offer a range and variety which will enable the instructor not only to select examples suitable for special groups of students, but also to vary the assignments from year to year. 4. Data Modern. - The data presented in connection with these exercises are thoroughly modern and in accordance with the recommendations and practice of the United States Bureau of Standards, and of our Scientific Societies and Engineering Associations. Excerpt from Problems in Physics: Derived From Military Situations and Experience Such definitions will also assist college teachers in their regular work by supplying problems and other material which will enable them to connect their instruction withthe broad field of application in which the mastery of scientific principles is objectively revealed. Instruction based on problems and job sheets of graded difficulty seem to offer as effective a means as can be found of developing the ability to do things in civilian life as well as in the army. The following collection of problems in several important branches of Physics has been made by Dr. Homer L. Dodge, head of Department of Physics of the University of Oklahoma, with the hearty cooperation of the Liaison Officers and officers of the various corps. It is one of a series on various technical subjects being pre pared by the War Department for the purpose of helping teachers who give technical instruction to the students of the R. 0. T. C. Those who can solve these problems will be well qualified in these subjects for service in the several staff corps and for civilian pur suits in which the subjects treated are involved. Excerpt from University of Iowa Studies, Vol. 2: Studies in Education In attempting to solve some of these problems one is con fronted with the desirability of some tests or scales with which to measure ability or achievement. With suitable means of measuring ability one can determine the amount of improvement in the given ability due to any given method used. Evidently a suitable means of measuring must be Objective. The personal, or subjective, element must be eliminated, in order to arrive at accuracy similar to that obtainable with the meter-stick or the foot-rule (9, The purpose of this study is to derive scales for measuring the results of physics teaching and to show some of their uses and applications as means of objective measurement. It is hoped that the results of this investigation may prove to be of some value in solving some of the many problems confronting physics instructors and supervisors.
