Originally published in 1866, this book by Samuel Laing and Thomas Henry Huxley offers a detailed examination of prehistoric artifacts discovered in the Scottish county of Caithness, including stone tools and ancient burial sites. The authors also offer insights into the physical characteristics of the early inhabitants of the region based on skeletal remains. Mr. Laing has published an account of his researches among the prehistoric remains of Caithness" in an octavo volume, which is enriched by a valuable memoir by Professor Huxley on the human remains discovered. These remains belong to the Stone period of the prehistoric existence of man in Britain, and most of the stone implements discovered are of the rudest type. From some indications it would appear that the primitive people whose traces are here described were cannibals. Most of Mr. Laing's researches were carried on in burial mounds near Keiss, but he has also examined some curious architectural relics, among which one shows clear indications of having been the result of the operations of three successive sets of people, the remains of each of the first two buildings having served as a foundation for their successors. The author has also found refuse heaps, or kitchen-middens, similar to those of Denmark, although presenting a difference in the species of animals of whose remains they are composed, a list of which, disfigured unfortunately by many inaccuracies of nomenclature, is given on page 50. The most interesting of the remains discovered are several bones of the Great Auk. Of the human remains, which were tolerably numerous, a full description, occupying indeed the greater part of the volume, is given by Professor Huxley; and the discussion of general anthropological questions arising from their consideration will be found of the greatest importance and interest. Professor Huxley establishes a new sub-group of Dolichocephalic skulls under the name of subbrachycephali, by means of which the comparison of the skulls of different races may be rendered more exact, and this is of considerable service to him in the discussion of the relationship of the primaeval inhabitants of Caithness.--The Foreign Quarterly Review, Volume 85

Excerpt from Pre-Historic Remains of Caithness: With Notes on the Human Remains In presenting to the Museum of Scottish Antiquaries the interesting series of Pre-historic remains which I have had the good fortune to discover in Caithness, I think it desirable to place on record the principal facts connected with their discovery in a more complete form than was possible in the papers on the subject, which have been read at meetings of various learned Societies. I am further induced to adopt this course by the opportunity which it affords of giving illustrations of the objects for the benefit of those who may not have seen the originals, and more especially because it enables me to present to the scientific world the valuable remarks of Professor Huxley on the crania and skeletons, accompanied by accurate drawings which have been made under his superintendence. A few introductory remarks may be permitted in order to explain the objects with which these researches were undertaken by me during a short residence in Caithness in the course of the past autumn. The problem of British archaeology may be thus stated. We know the two extremes of a series. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
