Excerpt from Warman's Practical Orthoepy and Critique It is our purpose, in these pages, to deal exclu sively with the ear-life, or orthoepy. This little volume is neither speculative nor theoretical, but purely practical. It is a companion alike for the teacher and student. The author may, here and there, express his opinion considering the pronunciation of certain words, but in no case does he assert his authority. There are many changes which he would hail with delight, but he believes that the standard of pronunciation can never be established unless we abide by the acknowledged authorities - Worces ter and Webster. 'tis true, our dictionaries need revising; but until that is done, or a new one established, we should accept them as they are. We cannot, therefore, agree with the compiler of Worcester's dictionary, that the standard of pro nunciation is not the authority of any dictionary, or of any orthoepist, but it is the present usage of literary and well-bred men.
