The greatest benefit that can be derived from experimental work is that obtained from the careful and painstaking observation of the experimenter; for this reason the directions given for the experiments are in outline, rather than in detail. The student who makes these experiments should keep careful notes, adding to the apparatus recommended anything that may seem desirable, varying the manipulation, and drawing such conclusions as the experiment teaches. He should also keep a full set of notes on observations made. The accuracy and fullness of these notes will be an index of the benefit that he is receiving from the work. No attempt has been made to cover more than a small part of the field; but the belief is entertained that a thorough familiarity with the principles and experiments outlined in this book will provide a good foundation for a more extended study, or for the practical application of these principles to the requirements of practice.
