Excerpt from Practical Cement Testing The body of the book, Chapters IV. To XII., is devoted to the conduct of routine tests of cement. The chapter on Chemical Analysis was prepared in collaboration with Mr. Charles S. Reeve, Chemist of the Philadelphia Laboratories. Chapter XIII. Deals with simple tests by which the character of a cement may be. Ascertained with practically no apparatus, and which might be of considerable service to the small con sumer or to the expert when it is impracticable to obtain ap paratus to make tests in the orthodox manner. The practical Operation of a cement laboratory is considered in. Chapter XIV., which also describes the organization, the labor required, and the cost of testing. To avoid an endless number of qualified statements, in de scribing the different properties and tests, the body of the book is devoted entirely to Portland cement, while in Chapter XV. Is given a description of the properties and tests of natural, improved, slag, sand, and other varieties of cement. Excerpt from Cement Testing It has-been our aim in preparing the following pages to give a few practical suggestions as to the methods of operating the various appliances sold by us for cement testing. We have written for those who have not had the advantage of a technical education rather than for the engineer; Every engineer possesses strong views on this subject; views which differ so widely as to thoroughly confuse the layman. It is to prevent this confusion that we have prepared this treatise, The opinions expressed are those arrived at after impartial con sideration of written and orally expressed views of a number of cement experts. The unprecedented demand for the implements described hereafter, and for information as to their use and operation, is our excuse for this publication. Any suggestions or criticism which will tend to improve the methods of testing cement or the construction of the appliances will be gratefully received, and, so far as possible, acted upon. Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on the Manufacture of Portland Cement In the somewhat censorious remarks, which Mr. Lipowitz considers it necessary to make regarding English Cement and its manufacturers, I will simply observe that a fair share of his reproof, in my opinion, should be borne by his countrymen; when excessive rivalry exists amongst merchants in supplying an imported article, like Cement, the tricks and evasions practised can only be successfully encountered by the vigilance of the consumer. Were rigid tests universally applied, adulterated or inferior Cement would cease to be made. N o manufacturer would be found to risk the production of an article that could not find a market. Excerpt from The Chemistry and Testing of Cement From the earliest historical times, materials belonging to the class of calcareous cements have been used in the construction of buildings, the methods of preparing and applying them being the result of the experience of generations of builders, and undergoing little change in the course of centuries. The modem development of engineering practice, dating from the second half of the eighteenth century, gave a new importance to these materials, and brought about the invention of many new types of cement, some of which have in great measure superseded the older kinds. A large and important industry has thus come into existence, and has gradually spread from a few local centres until it has become established in most parts of the civilised world. As the demand for cements on the part of the engineer and the builder has increased, so their requirements in respect of quality have become more exacting, and the manufacturer has not only been called on to increase his production, but also to improve the strength and stability of his product. This has been accomplished with a remarkable degree of success, partly as the result of improvements in mechanical processes and appliances, but also in no small degree through the co-operation of the chemist. This second factor assumes an increasing importance as the standard of quality is raised, and as efforts are made to extend the range of the raw materials employed in the industry. Excerpt from Cement and Concrete One who wishes only a catechetical reply to any question that may arise concerning cement and its use will be somewhat disappointed in these pages; on the other hand, he who would devote special attention to the subject must, of course, go far beyond them. The author has attempted to take a middle course, avoiding on the one hand a dogmatic statement of facts, and on the other too detailed and extended series of tests, but giving, where practicable, sufficient tests to support the state ments made, and endeavoring to show the connection between theory and practice, the laboratory and the field. Excerpt from A Manual of Cement Testing for the Use of Engineers and Chemists in Colleges and in the Field In order to insure uniformity of results in the testing of cement, it is essential that each test should invariably be made in precisely the same manner and under exactly the same conditions. A committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers has, with this aim in view, prepared and published a set of Standard Methods of Testing Cement, and these methods are to-day employed throughout the United States. This little volume, as its name implies, is a laboratory manual on cement testing, and is intended to assist in bringing about uniformity in the testing of cement. The authors have endeavored to present, in a somewhat condensed form, such directions as will enable a student in the laboratory or an operator in the field office to correctly interpret the Standard Methods of Testing and Specifications for Cement as published by the committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society for Testing Materials, Association of American Portland Cement Manufacturers, and the American Railway Engineers and Maintenance of Way Association; they have endeavored to give sufficient detail to enable all students to learn the same manipulations and thus be able to perform each test in a certain well defined and similar manner.
