Excerpt from Popular History of Utah It has fallen to my lot to prepare for publication three histories of Utah. The earliest and largest, consisting of four volumes, published in elegant and expensive style, had of necessity but a limited circulation. Nevertheless it may be found in many homes throughout the State, and upon the shelves of leading libraries in various parts of the land. The second history was written at the request of local educators, for use in the grammar grades of the public schools. Prepared in haste to meet an urgent demand, "The Making of a State" did not aim to give a complete presentation of the subject, though all salient points, social, political and industrial, were touched upon in its pages. Controversial matters were purposely omitted, for the sake of good feeling between "Mormon" and "Gentile" children attending those schools. The work now issued represents the realization of a desire to produce a history of Utah complete in a single volume, one that could be sold at such a figure as to place it within the reach of all. Moreover, it was my wish to make clearer certain points imperfectly presented in my first production. The period during which it was compiled - that of the anti-polygamy crusade - was one of strife and turmoil; books and documents had been confiscated or were scattered; and sources of information were not accessible nor so plentiful as they are at the present time. Consequently I labored at a great disadvantage. The difficulty of writing contemporaneous history, amid the heat and stress of happenings involved in the narrative, is one recognized by all intelligent minds. That I have experienced this difficulty, I admit. Never at any time, however, have I purposely misrepresented anybody or anything. I write from the "Mormon" viewpoint, but not as an Anti-"Gentile." I have none but friendly feelings toward all the people of Utah, regardless of sect, party, color, or creed. This is the story of my native State - a record of the facts as I behold them; and "with malice toward none," and "with charity for all," I send it forth upon its mission. Excerpt from The Making of a State: A School History of Utah In the prospectus of this work the author announced his intention to prepare a History of Utah suitable for use in the grammar grades of the public schools. A text book for children, it was to be plain, simple, and direct in diction, a story briefly and tersely told, dealing fairly and impartially with all classes and persons concerned. In fulfillment of that promise, this little volume is sent forth. Of necessity, the historical narrative is very much abridged, yet care has been taken to include all essential facts and features, especially those of a permanent character, educative and elevating in their influence, and closely connected with the founding and development of the State. Excerpt from Chief Episodes in the History of Utah This little book is a collection of pen pictures of some of the important events in the history of Utah. They are writ ten as they have been told to the children of the schools and to my own little girls who have sat and wondered at the trials and sorrows of their grandfathers and grandmothers. My hope is that they will inspire a love for history in the hearts of the children of this state. Being a grandnephew of the great Mormon leader, Brig ham Young, I have had access to the most important mate rial concerning the Mormon people. I feel a great desire to make use of this material in putting before the world a de tailed study of the Mormons and their work. If the public enjoys these little sketches, I shall feel encouraged to tell at greater length the dramatic story of my people. Excerpt from Reminiscences of Early Utah The glaringly false statements in Whitney's History of Utah respecting the nature and effect of certain occurrences which have in great part gone to make up the history of the State, together with his malignment of the motives of myself and other Gentiles who in the past Opposed the peculiar theocratic and anti-american system established and maintained in Utah while it was a Terri tory by the high priesthood of the Mormon church, are the reasons for the writing of these Reminiscences of my connection with the conflict waged for many years between Mormons and Gentiles. I can vouch for the accuracy of the statements of the facts here given; but whether my observations of the significance of these facts are warranted, the unbiased reader himself must judge. After a careful scrutiny of Whitney's history, I deemed it due the men, many of whom were federal officials and few of whom are yet living, and who have been so wantonly besmirched by him, to correct, at least, some of his erroneous assertions and covert insinuations. Excerpt from History of Utah, Vol. 4 of 4: Biographical; Illustrated It was in the Spring of 1890 that the Bishop was engaged to write this History by a company organized for the purpose of publishing it, and which employed him at a stated monthly salary for the literary part of the work. The undertaking was gigantic. To carry it to success required years of hard labor on the part of the author, as well as the business heads of the concern; fighting against adverse conditions which were at times almost overwhelming; so that it may be imagined with what a sense of relief the Bishop lays aside his pen, and the publishers and proprietors also end their labors.
