Praise Song for My Children celebrates twenty-one years of poetry by one of the most significant African poets of this century. Patricia Jabbeh Wesley guides us through the complex and intertwined highs and lows of motherhood and all the roles that it encompasses: parent, woman, wife, sister, friend. Her work is deeply personal, drawing from her own life and surroundings to convey grief, the bleakness of war, humor, deep devotion, and the hope of possibility. These poems lend an international voice to the tales of motherhood, as Wesley speaks both to the African and to the Western experience of motherhood, particularly black motherhood. She pulls from African motifs and proverbs, utilizing the poetics of both the West and Africa to enrich her striking emotional range. Leading us to the depths of mourning and the heights of tender love, she responds to American police brutality, writing "To be a black woman is to be a woman, / ready to mourn," and remembers a dear friend who is at once "mother and wife and friend and pillar / and warrior woman all in one." Wesley writes poetry that moves with her through life, land, and love, seeing with eyes that have witnessed both national and personal tragedy and redemption. Born in Tugbakeh, Liberia and raised in Monrovia, Wesley emigrated to the United States in 1991 to escape the Liberian civil war. In this moving collection, she invites us to join her as she buries loved ones, explores long-distance connection through social media, and sings bittersweet praises of the women around her, of mothers, and of Africa.

The poems in I Weave a Song of Praise range from lyric gems that capture the flora and fauna of the desert where the poet lives to poetic retelling of familiar Bible narratives. Pensive meditations on faith and the Christian life reveal a reverent love for the Bible and the Lord it reveals, as well as a sensitivity to the human condition. Brown believes that poems should be both beautiful and true, and her work embodies both of those intentions. Each thoughtful poem is a gift of inspiration and enrichment to the reader.

"God is love." "We love Him because He first loved us." (John 4:16,19) Most of these hymns and poems are sadly obscure today, many of them even very rare and hard to find; yet all of them are full of truth and glow the love of God. Here is true praise, true worship. Worthy is the Lamb. Song of Solomon 8:7 "Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it; if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would be utterly condemned." That is the love of the Lord Jesus Christ to His own, and-from Him alone, and to Him alone-the love of His own to Him first and then to one another.

The quintessential folk poet of the Third World, Bob Marley influenced generations of musicians and writers. He was a performer who held true to his religious and cultural heritage, who rallied against injustice, and who became an internationally revered musical icon. Renowned poet and scholar Kwame Dawes analyses in detail his verses and lyrics, matching them against the social and political climate of the time and asking of them what it meant to be a black, Jamaican man thrust into the limelight of western society; how change can be affected through music; and how political and ethical truths can be woven into song. His lyrics are poignant, powerful and poetic and this book showcases his written word. Updated to include an interactive timeline of his life, formed with videos and imagery, as well as integrated Spotify playlists, this is the perfect companion to Bob Marley’s recordings.

It was 1982, I had just discovered Reggae music (after Bob Marley’s passing), and I heard a song that changed my life for the better. The song was “Chant a Psalm a Day” by a Reggae band , Steel Pulse. Listening carefully to the lyrics of that song revived my love for writing poetry, which I had all but abandoned since 9th grade English class. So the poem “100 Poems Is Not Enough” was written and I decided this should be the title of this book of poems because this speaks so much to how I feel. Hopefully this collection of mostly short, direct to the point, plain and simple Praise Poems will comfort you and inspire you to Praise God with any and all the talents that God has given you.

"Poetic Parables, Songs and Poems from an imperfect pen" is the first attempt at publishing for the author/composer, Vickie L. Detert. With the Lord and his gifts as inspiration, there are many more works waiting their turn to be shared. Their message of faith, forgiveness, strength, hope and love have been blessings to Miss Detert and others. Now, her prayer is to share them with as many as God is willing and she trusts He will guide them through each and every word. An added bonus to the music portion of this book is that each song is presented twice. The first presentation is as melody, chords and lyrics. The second is with a piano accompaniment. In most of the later, you will also find the pieces are written in a slightly lower key, thus giving the singers a choice of range. Miss Vickie L. Detert has been a life-long Christian who has, as most Christians, faced many of life's challenges with her God-given faith being the answer, the hope and the strength she has needed. As far back as she can remember, music and faith have walked hand in hand and so despite being convinced at a young age that writing was not one of her gifts, it was not surprising that in 1978 she began writing and composing pieces reflective of her faith. As a music teacher and church musician, Miss Detert has shared much of her writings with friends, family and local congregations. Now, she hopes the Lord will use this book to reach out and bless all of those who are moved to open it's cover and look within. Her wish is that God use her work to bring others closer to Him as it has done for her.
