Excerpt from Poems and Songs The consciousness that he belongs to an unconquered race has sustained the native of the north in every circumstance of trial. Even when thrust down and trampled upon, he summons up courage and regains his strength, remembering from whence he sprung. He who has been accustomed to hardship in his youth will not complain of roughness when he is old. The valorous who has no personal enemy to contend with, will seek to obtain mastery over himself. Excerpt from Songs and Miscellaneous Poems Among the diverse interests of this restless money-grubbing world, there is one which should hold a larger place than it does in the affections of the masses, - namely, the honest, unaffected love of home and home pleasures. In these days we are all of us too much disposed to seek enjoyment abroad, and to figure more than is good for us in the eye of the public. The craving for excitement has made us impatient with home, and the fireside and domestic shrines have in large measure lost their attraction. We are no longer satisfied with the novel, with the song or with the play, that used to delight our forefathers; nothing so simple and innocent would now content us. Even our religion has suffered a change. The stern morality and unbending creeds of other days have become pliant and yielding, while compromise and emasculated beliefs have taken their place. The old doctrines familiar to the by-gone pulpit now offend us, though we are not particular if the preacher resorts to irreverence and slang, on the contrary, we rather encourage him in this propensity. With tastes and cravings so destructive to the spiritual life, what wonder that simple joys and quiet domestic pleasures have in the social world lost much of their charm? Yet "the common people," - as the phrase goes, - the men and women who are doing the every-day work of this toiling world, stand more than ever in need of rest and quiet, and the kindly solacement of happy fireside intercourse. Excerpt from Songs and Poems From 1819 to 1879 I Have collected from my dear father's papers the following songs and poems, hoping they might prove interesting to his numerous friends, not alone for their poetic genius, but as illustrative of his gentle loving nature, which enabled him to live to the great age of eighty-four, beloved by all who knew him, without, as has been frequently said of him, "a single enemy." I have included amongst them some which have been published in magazines and in his "Recollections." I have also added some songs from a drama called "The Follies of a Night," which he turned into an Operetta, the music of which was composed by poor Miss Gabriel. Many difficulties occurred to prevent its being produced, and as the words of the songs are charming, I venture to add them to the collection. The whole Operetta is published by Messrs. Wood & Co., 201 Regent Street. The numerous operas for which he wrote the libretto are all in print, I believe. Excerpt from Poetry and Song These rhymes have been developed at intervals, and thrown off at random, during the past thirty-five years of a somewhat busy public life, involving almost constant travel, unaccompanied, until within the present year, by any serious view to their ultimate collection in a volume by themselves. With the exception of the last poem in the book, - which is my latest production, and in which I attempt to give voice to the universal and "Divine Energy" that acts in unison with the Supreme Mind, - they are, as a rule, arranged without regard to the order in which they were first written. A number of them are already familiar to the public through repeated appearance in the newspapers; and, with others less familiar, are now for the first time organized into a separate literary colony at the earnest request, not only of old and valued friends, but of strangers in all parts of the land.
