"Except for original pieces about Bob Dylan and Peter, Paul and Mary, the articles compiled here about folk, bluegrass and new acoustic musicians first appeared in Guitar Player and Frets magazines. Most pieces have been updated; they profile the artists' backgrounds, careers and contributions to their musical forms. (The articles on Odetta, Pete Seeger, Bill Monroe and Richie Havens include interviews with the musicians.) Subjects represent different eras of modern folk music: from the early days (Woody Guthrie and Malvina Reynolds) to the height of popularity 25 years ago (the Kingston Trio, Joan Baez and Arlo Guthrie) to new acoustic artists (David Grisman and Tony Trischka). Also of note: an article about the Lomax family, the archivists who have made extensive recordings of folk music that might otherwise have been lost. Although this book gives the novice a general background, it adds little new information."-- Publishers Weekly.

American fingerstyle guitar had its true beginnings with parlor room guitarists in the 19th century who cultivated a written musical tradition modeled after that of European guitarists. Polite society of the time enjoyed stylized society ballroom dances including marches, polkas, and waltzes. the works selected for this anthology represent the best of American parlor-salon guitar music. Several of the composers presented here, such as William Foden, Charles DeJanon, and William O. Bateman, are gradually becoming familiar to a new generation of fingerstyle guitarists interested in the classic guitar's American past. Written in notation and tablature. Audio available online.

Arthel "Doc" Watson, an 82-year-old musician from North Carolina, is one of the two or three most important acoustic guitarists in American musical history. The story of Watson's music is a rich and complex narrative which involves the listener in an exploration of the music of the Scottish settlers in the Appalachian Mountains and the changes in that music as the mountaineers were influenced by the African American music of itinerant laborers in the nineteenth century and by sounds from records and radio early in the twentieth century. Despite Watson's importance to American acoustic music and despite the richness of the story of his music, a full study of his music has not been realized until now. This book explores the musical culture of Watson's immediate family (the hymns of Watson's church, the ballads and fiddle tunes of his immediate family, and the music of his mountain home) as well as the extended aural world that came to the mountains through records and radio when Watson was a young boy. Finally this study explores Watson's important contributions to the folk revival of the 1960s when he helped change the role of the acoustic guitar in American music. This work will be important to students of American music and folk culture.
