Excerpt from A d104 Book of Physiology, Vol. 1 of 2: General Physiology Although this work has been modelled to some extent on my "Outlines of Physiology," now out of print, it is essentially a new book, and as it aims at giving a more detailed account of the subject, the title of "Outlines of Physiology" has been abandoned for that of a "d104 Book of Physiology." I have not endeavoured to give anything like an encyclopaedic account of the modern researches that have built up the physiological science of the present time, but rather to weave into a consecutive narrative the main facts and principles of physiology, as these present themselves to my mind, after nearly eighteen years of experience as a teacher of the science. Probably no science is advancing with greater rapidity, if one may form an opinion from the large number of original papers that are announced, month by month, and from the large number of investigators in the physiological laboratories of the Continent, of America, and of our own country. Thus it is year by year becoming more difficult for a teacher to keep abreast of the wave of progress, and still more difficult to assimilate the new facts and to incorporate them with his previous knowledge. Each teacher will also view the subject more especially according to his prodilections for the morphological, the chemical, or the physical side of the science, and it is not easy in the preparation of such a work as this to be impartial and to present the science in all its completeness to the reader. Excerpt from A d104-Book of Physiology This book has been written at the solicitation of students who have attended my lectures for the past eight years. The aim has not been to write a treatise on the subject, but rather an elementary work containing the chief facts of physiology which are necessary to the student who wishes to apply them in the practice of his profession. Physiology is the basis of medicine, and its understanding is requisite to the study of pathology. With this idea in mind, small space has been given to the subject of electro-physiology. The technique of the laboratory has been omitted for similar reasons. In the preparation of this book it was found impossible to give due credit to all the sources from which information has been derived. The illustrations have been selected from various authorities, to whom credit has been given. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Cotton Plant in Egypt Studies in Physiology and Genetics This book has been written with the purpose of abstracting the results of a series of researches made upon cotton plants in Egypt, which investigations, though diverse, were connected by the desire to know all that could be learned about the plant itself. Portions of these inquiries have appeared in various journals, but most of the material here utilised has not yet been published. Where it may appear to the reader that a conclusion necessitates much fuller data than is placed before him, I can only ask his clemency until such time as a fuller monograph shall be written. Excerpt from Principles of General Physiology IN the preparation of courses of lectures dealing with various physiological processes I have found considerable difficulty, and spent much time, in the extraction from books and original papers, many of them not biological, of material of fundamental importance in the proper treatment of the subject. The mechanism of reactions in heterogeneous systems may be mentioned. It seemed to me, therefore, that the results of this labour might be of use to others, whose work does not allow them sufficient time to read articles which do not appear to bear upon their particular domain of science. In arranging these facts, however, it became manifest that a somewhat wider treatment would be of more value, so that the book might be of service to all desiring a general, elementary, treatment of what may be called abstract physiology, as distinct from the applied physiology required by the agricultural, medical, or veterinary student for the purpose of his profession. In extenuation of my conduct in producing a work on physiology for the use, as I venture to hope, of all those who have any interest in science, I should like to quote a few words by Huxley to be found in his address, On the Educational Value of the Natural History Sciences (huxley, 1902-1903, p. 59 - see Bibliography). He gives an answer to the question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Human Physiology This work is intended for those who desire an easy introduction to die study of the Human Frame. The matter embraces those parts of the subject which arc contained in the Elementary Syllabus of the Science and Art Department, but is not confined strictly within those limits. A short chapter on the Ear has been added (thus completing the outline of the organs of special sense), and also another on the Larynx and the Voice. And again, although the students working according to this Syllabus are not required to obtain any 'information upon points of structure needing the use of the compound microscope' with the exception of the characters of the corpuscles of the blood, yet in many other instances such information has been given. It is eminently desirable that the student should avail himself of every opportunity of making his study thoroughly practical. The author therefore has given, here and there, many hints as to how he should proceed in easy dissections; and has introduced a number of simple experiments, so that the knowledge gained may be of a sound character. It is too often felt that such practical and experimental methods of acquiring information are roundabout and tedious; but the author's experience has taught him to affirm that it is the readiest, surest, and certainly the most pleasant way of attaining the end in view. In the last decade, enormous progress has been made on the physiology of plant roots, including on a wide range of molecular aspects. Much of that progress has been captured in the chapters of this book. Breakthroughs have been made possible through integration of molecular and whole-plant aspects. The classical boundaries between physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology have vanished. There has been a strong focus on a limited number of model species, including Arabidopsis thaliana. That focus has allowed greater insight into the significance of specific genes for plant development and functioning. However, many species are very different from A. thaliana, in that they are mycorrhizal, develop a symbiosis with N2-fixing microsymbionts, or have other specialised root structures. Also, some have a much greater capacity to resist extreme environments, such as soil acidity, salinity, flooding or heavy-metal toxicities, due to specific adaptations. Research on species other than A. thaliana is therefore pivotal, to develop new knowledge in plant sciences in a comprehensive manner. This fundamental new knowledge can be the basis for important applications in, e.g., agriculture and plant conservation. Although significant progress has been made, much remains to be learnt. It is envisaged that discoveries made in the recent past will likely lead to major breakthroughs in the next decade.

Excerpt from Outlines of Physiology IN revising this work my aim has been to fulfill the original purpose of the book in so far as possible. Dr. Jones said in the preface to the first edition This volume has been prepared with a view of presenting, in as convenient form as possible, the essential facts of modern physiology as related to the practice of medicine. This object has been kept in mind in the preparation of the third edition. In this edition the Introduction, the chapters on The Cell, The Elementary Tissues and on the Blood have been entirely rewritten and new illustrations added. A new chapter, with illustrations, on The Physiological Characteristics of Muscle, has been added. The chapter on Secretion has been rearranged. New subject matter has been added to the chapter on The Physiology of Digestion and Absorption. Other minor changes have been made throughout the book where such were deemed advisable. Especial acknowledgment is due to Dr. Robert G. Stephens for his valuable work in preparing the second edition.
