Excerpt from Physiography for Advanced Students The course of elementary physiography, outlined in the helpful syllabus issued by the Department of Science and Art in 1896, constitutes an excellent introduction to physical science. In the advanced stage of the subject, the fundamental principles described in the elementary course are developed and expanded so that the two stages together provide the student with a com prehensive view of various branches of natural knowledge. Excerpt from Advanced Physiography This book has been prepared at the request of a number of teachers of Physiography. It is supplementary to my 'elementary Physiography, ' and is very similar in structure, and the arrangement follows pretty closely the lines laid down in the Syllabus of Advanced Physiography of the Science and Art Department. Though many of the subjects treated in the first two chapters are not directly included in the syllabus, the questions set from time to time indicate that the examiners require candidates to have a knowledge of them. Indeed, a knowledge of astronomical instruments, and the principles under lying their construction, is essential for a proper understanding of the results attained. Excerpt from Practical Physiography The last few years have withnessed important changes in the text-books pertaining to Physical Geography. The study of the world as a fixed model has given place to the study of a world whose physical features are undergoing continual change. This change is in turn seen to affect the climate and the life conditions of plants and animals, and to have an important influence upov the activities of men. The number of books treating the subject from this newer point of view has rapidly increased, and several of them are so excellent that there would appear to be scarcely room for another book covering the same ground in the same manner. It seems to the author, however, that the evolution of better methods of teaching Physical Geography is still going on. The student will never gain what he should from the study until the use of the text-book is supplemented, not by the indoor laboratory method, for that would take the life out of the subject, but by the study of nature itself in the great outdoor laboratory. It is not the amount of ground gone over; it is not what is memorized from a textbook; it is not watching experiments in the class room, which makes Physical Geography, or Physiography as we prefer to call it, of value in the high school. It is rather the gaining of an ability to understand the meaning of the phenomena of the land, the water, and the air, and the relation of all life to them. For this purpose nothing can take the place of excursions and the study of the real world. The author has tried to work out in the present volume a practical concrete treatment of the subject along these lines. The book is intended as an aid to study, not as a compendium of information. Consequently a description of the world as a whole is omitted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Students Laboratory Manual of Physical Geography The brief treatment of life in this manual in no way represents the author's estimate of its importance. The individual teacher must lead in supplementing the text on this theme, since the material is largely in books, and the selection depends on the school library. A few exercises are given, based on maps which show distribution. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Physiography for Beginners Under the guidance, and in the spirit of this new syllabus, an attempt has been made in this little book to provide the beginner with such an introduction to Physical Science. No knowledge of Mathematics, except an acquaintance with the ordinary processes of Arithmetic, has been assumed. The lessons have been made as experimental as possible. Not only have the experiments accompanying the syllabus in the recent Science and Art Directory been incorporated, but many others have been added. Those from the Directory are indicated thus.
