This is the only extended textbook that covers in particular the physics of the upper polar atmosphere where the polar lights demonstrates the end product of a process taking place at extremely high latitudes between the solar wind and the upper polar atmosphere. A textboook that meets the modern requriement for reading in order to obtain a master of science or a Dr. of science degree in upper polar atmosphere physics or the interaction between the soalr wind and the Earth's atmosphere

This book presents current knowledge on chemistry and physics of Arctic atmosphere. Special attention is given to studies of the Arctic haze phenomenon, Arctic tropospheric clouds, Arctic fog, polar stratospheric and mesospheric clouds, atmospheric dynamics, thermodynamics and radiative transfer as related to the polar environment. The atmosphere-cryosphere feedbacks and atmospheric remote sensing techniques are presented in detail. The problems of climate change in the Arctic are also addressed.

"On the basis of the atmospheric composition given by F.S. Johnson in 1960, the contribution of auroral particles to the dissociation of oxygen molecules in the polar upper atmosphere is investigated. ... The heating of the polar mesosphere by exothermic association of the oxygen atoms, intensified by the subsidence of the upper polar atmosphere during the polar night, is calculated and found to be close to the estimate given by W.W. Kellogg in 1961. The investigation indicates, however, that Kellogg's estimate should be reduced slightly to allow for the cooling effect produced by far infrared emission from atomic oxygen in the upper atmosphere."--Page i.
